Sport compact Car with these options..
Friday, September 23, 2005 7:28 PM
I am graduating from nursing school in 3months. I'll probably end up buying a new car before a house So just wondering what you'd add to my list as some options. The car needs to be roomy enough for 2 + an upcoming little one So, something with a backseat that is fun to drive when I'm not driving around with the wife and child. So I need something that has an easily accessible back seat.

Dodge Neon SRT-4
Subaru WRX
Subaru STI
Saturn Ion Redline
Chevrolet Cobalt SS
Mini Cooper S Works
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Mitsubishi Lacer Evolution MR

Considering the WRX over the STI just because it's cheaper. I don't know how hardcore I want to go just yet.

Thanks.

"I'll probably end up buying a new car before a house" - words you will regret for years if you don't buy the house first. Houses build equity, cars depreciate. You can take additional needed loans out against a home, you can't do that with a car. Drive what you have now or buy something decend used to get you by, but don't delay on a house if you have cash burning a hole in your pocket. I am speaking from experience on this.
But..... it's your money, or loss of it.

I agree here. Buy the house. Land/Houses seriously appreciate in my area. A hell of a return normally within a few years.

Money really isn't going to be a problem. I have spent zero cash while in college and have over 15K saved. My wife and myself are both getting 12K dollar sign on bonuses and are going to be making 45K a year each. Although I will buy the house first, I just wanted you guys to feel the drive I have to get a car Family first of course.

So Evo MR is what is leading then? No love for the Scooby?

Keep the responses coming. I think in a month or two I'm going to start going to dealerships and start test drives.

Also, if I didn't want an all out sports car, what would you pick that can serve both the suttle daily driver and weekend warrior role?

I'd go with the WRX. Not overly expensive, has the space and power you're looking for I believe, and still has a decent quality inside and out. I may be wrong, but the MR is kind of stripped, isn't it?

yea like i said, Audis are nice, quiet, and very luxary...and there 4 doors, and the s4's are bi-turbo's 250hp...

so i mean there nice cars, i work for Audi, and i didnt care for them, till i drove one

MR isnt stripped, you're thinking the RS. The MR has all the equipment of the regular evo just some lighter body panels, a 6 speed transmisson the vortex generators, different wheels and suspension and a few other small things. The MR is far from stripped.

BUY THE HOUSE FIRST! Period. It does not matter that you have some money saved, or that you will be making some money. Car dealers will fall over each other to give you a loan. Mortgage companies aren't so generous though. They take every last PENNY into account, and if you don't fit the criteria to a T, you might not get the house, or you will be stuck with a mortgage that you don't want, and a couple years from now you'll be paying out the rear in interest.

As for the car... if its going to be a family car, GET A SEDAN!!!!! I absolutely can't stress that enough. You might think now that it won't be a big deal to get the kid in and out of a coupe, but trust me, after a couple months you will be kicking yourself.

Its a tough call.
Everyone who is suggesting buying a house have very valid points.
You list some very good cars, most of which i wouldn't mind owning. Evo / STi is a good call. The EVO is the only mitsu i would even consider owning, but you would still have to pull my leg. Honestly i would shop around. While both of those car certainly top the lists, you have to understand what they are designed for. Certainly not ride comfort.

I think over time you will get sick of the harsh ride both offers. I was in a similar boat as you and drove the majority of the cars on that list. I really liked both the evo and sti, but after some tough decisions, I ended up getting the Legacy GT. In the long run i don't regret it one bit. It still offers lots of power and if i want i can make it just as fast as the others with mods. However in the long run, the STi and evo will never have the ride comfort this one offers. Keep that in mind, especially where its supposed to be a family car of some sort. In my mind i have the best of both worlds.

S4 would be my next choice, but there is no way i would ever own an audi outside of a 100% covered warranty. You are asking for trouble if thats the case.

wrx or sti, or the evo. The most fun youll ever have with 4 doors.

you obviously didnt learn that much in school if your going to buy a 27k+ car before a house.

Family first...right?

I'd pick the evo LAST as it seems like you really don't know how extreme you want to go and it is by far the most racelike car there. The only thing "family" about it is 4 doors. Even the sti would be a smoother ride if you're not going for all out autocross performance. An wrx would be smart to save some money and still have it all.

Well those of you commenting on the house really need to read my 2nd post...family first so I'm getting the house....just wanted to stress my desire to own a new car. I am beginning to lean towards the WRX. I've already test drove one of them and loved it...but I really can't remember the ride. As for the Audi, I think everyone is right about the costs of repairs after warranty is gone. So yeah, leaning towards WRX but I'll have to wait and see. I might go test driving in a week or two, have to wait and see how clinicals go and all that jazz.

On another note, my extended family (parents on both sides) are recommending that I buy the car first as I do not have much credit to speak of Like I mentioned before haven't bought anything the whole time I've been in college. I guess I'll just have to go in and see how bad my interest rates are going to be..either way, soonest I'll be getting either a house or a car is going to be March. Want to work for a few months so I have a good chunk of change in the bank.

So thanks for all your suggestions and I'll let you know how test drives go. One last thing, are the SRT-4's built like the neons? I mean interior wise...I know too many people who have 2 or 3 year old neons that are total trash. Thanks again guys.

well since you have so much time
id try to drive as many different cars as you can to see what is best

and yes, the interiors of the srt-4 is just like any other neon 2000+
