Question about quads...
Wednesday, September 21, 2005 1:42 PM
I was wondering if anybody here could help me out with my inquiry:

How does the "reverse" system work on a quad/ATV? My friends and I are starting to build a street-legal go-kart (see: Ford Festiva with a mid-mounted 1000cc motorcycle engine) and we figured that a reverse gear would be a good idea. I'm pretty sure that it's not part of the transmission itself (because you use a lever to put a quad into reverse and not the foot shifter), but I cannot find anywhere how it's set up. If anyone here could help me figure out how it works, if i could make one work on a motorcycle engine, etc; it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

They are still in the transmission...it's just another knob since you shift with your foot you don't accidently put it in reverse. It's just a failsafe type deal....For motorcycles like the Goldwing they actually come as a factory option..other bikes such as the HD Electra Glide you can buy a kit..my dad has an Ultra with a reverse kit...here's how it looks. http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id71.html It's just a gear and handle addon to the stock one...if you want to do it try to find a junk quad and use that tranny

thanks for the info...

we were figuring on grabbing an old quad for the reverse and maybe the rear diff also. if not, we are going straight-axle
