Anyone know much about the 06' Volkswagen Golf GLS TDI 4dr Hatchback? We have been looked at one, but I thought the dependability was not that great for VWs.

Thanks!

If one thing Germans can do right, it's diesels. They are almost as good as the French in reliability.

Yup, VWs Diesels are very good cars. Seriously consider them if you're in the market.

1st of all.... there is no 06 Golf's yet

if your looking for an 06 when it comes out keep in mind it will be the first year for the new design which means nothing with work for a couple years (new jettas, new passats, phaetons, touregs, they are nightmares for liek the first 2 years or so, VW doesn't get anythign right on the first try)

The TDI engine will last forever BUT you will be replacing intake manifolds about every 30-40K miles, they carbon up to the point where the opening would barely fit a pencil through it. also there is specific oil (not just regular synthetic) that is REQUIRED for the pumper deisels (the newst version of the deisel, since 04) and its not cheap. Over all power train will be good, everythign electrical will suck

^^Fuel pumps have always been expensive atleast on German cars, which can cost like 70% of the price of a new engine itself. Ouch.
But atleast on mercedes, when they switch to common-rail system, it has been even more reliable and yes very much less costly.
Like you said, I think the the 04 VW and newer has the new system.

As for the electrical problems, that is a common problem with all German cars. lol

Thanks for the info. We are getting rid of our Isuzu Rodeo because we don't want two gas guzzlers. We are also looking into getting a Toyota Prius, but we would have to wait 2-3 months to get one.

I'd say wait for thr prius, either way you'll have to wait on the VW cause like I said there is no 06 golf in the US yet

2 words BIO DIESEL

We are leaning more towards the Prius. I don't know much about diesel cars. I have not seen one station yet that sells Biodiesel. We have ones that sell diesel, but it is not much cheaper than the regular unleaded.

60 MPG for city driving sounds pretty good! It might be woth the wait.

The Prius is only good if you do alot of in town driving becasue you are only using the electric motor. Once you get up to highway speed they get about 35 mpg because the electrical engine is no longer working, and the just the gas engine is. Giving you just a regular gas engine that you have now. The media has over hyped this car and hybrid cars in general, sure they are good cars , but are expensive to get into and expensive to repair if anything were to go wrong.
As for the TDI Golf, the engine will last a long time, and with all car companies, the first year for a new design will have some bugs to be worked out, but that is why cars comes with warranties. If you plan to keep the car for 10 years than it is a good idea to get an extended warranty to cover any problems that might occur after the waranty is up.
I like VW and yes they are overpriced, IMO a good car and very stylish. I was considering one myself. You will be able to order them within the next couple of months.

95% of our driving is city driving so it would benefit us. It would cost us about $23K for an 05 Prius w/package #4(HID, VSC, side curtain airbags, Smart Keyless Entry System, foglamps).......not too bad IMO.

Warranty is pretty good to: 36 months/36,000 miles basic warranty/Powertrain: 60 months/60,000 miles /Hybrid-Related Component Coverage: Prius' hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles.

We are still thinking about it.

Good thing that it uncludes the battery because you will need anouther loan to pay for the thing if it were to go bad, or when it comes time for replacing. I heard that those things can cost up to 5 Grand if one of those batteries or cells take a crap on you.

around here, diesel is selling for the same price as 93 gas (well, it WAS the same price, it's obviously cheaper at the moment). so, even though you get better mileage with a diesel, you're still paying the same amount in the end.

i like the prius, just cause they look pretty badass and you can get some cool @!#$ with them

No you're not. You're paying the same amount for the same quantity, but you get double as much mileage. That's like filling your cavalier up at 50% off every time.

How is that the same amount in the end....?

hmm, i'm working with figures pre-hurricane, so bear with me:

2005 VW Golf TDI GLS- $19,580
diesel - approx. $2.75/gal here x 14.5 gal = $39.88
approx. 587 miles per tank (avg. city/highway)
$39.88 / 587 = $.07 per mile
.07 x 12,000 miles per year = $840 yearly fuel cost

2005 VW Golf 2.0 GLS- $18,390
87 octane - approx. $2.55/gal here x 14.5 gal = $36.98
approx. 400 miles per tank (avg. city/highway)
$36.98 / 400 = $.09 per mile
.09 x 12,000 miles per year = $1080 yearly fuel cost

1080 - 840 = $240 per year in extra fuel costs that the gas motor has

19580 - 18390 = $1190 premium that a diesel has over a gas motor

1190 / 240 = 5... in other words, it would take 5 years (@ 12,000 miles per year) of owning the car to make up in fuel costs what the premium for buying a diesel is... at 9000 miles per year, it would take 6 years and 8 months to break even. At 15,000 miles, it would take 4 years. Of course, these are all based on equal city and highway driving - If you drive more city, it will take longer to break even, and if you drive more highway, it will take less time.

so, depending on how long you plan on owning the car and how many miles you drive per year, my previous statement could be either true or false.

My 1983 Rabbit GTi gets great gas mileage, and cost $1000 in excellent shape. Maybe you should consider just buying a beater car that gets around 30-40mpg.
