Chevy Cobalt's Stage 1 & 2
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 9:48 AM
With 205 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque on tap from a lightweight aluminum overhead-cam 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the supercharged model is lively. But if you really want something to get charged up about, stand by for Stage 1 and Stage 2 upgrades for the SS Supercharged (and Saturn Ion Red Line) due in early 2006.

Stage 1 adds revised fuel injectors and new engine calibration to pick up another 20 hp; Stage 2 increases boost via a smaller supercharger pulley (along with another engine recalibration job) to amp up the torque by about 20 lb-ft. The packages can be readily installed by the owner. Pricing will be announced in November at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.

While the Stage 1 increases power, the added torque in the Stage 2 package is worth the extra cost and effort. The added boost provides a substantial increase in power, especially at the low- and mid-rpm range where base and Stage 1 models need a downshift to prevent running short of breath.

Need more incentive? GM Performance hoss John Heinricy says he expects a 20 percent power boost from the Stage 2 kit “when all is said and done.” That’s about 246 hp and 240 lb-ft, if you’re keeping score.

No prices as of yet.

Will this be along the lines of Mopar's stages for the SRT-4 where it will keep the factory warranty even with the upgrades? Or would they need to be installed by the dealer for that to happen?

SRT4's upgrades do void your warranty, maybe 1 and 2 don't, but the stage that includes a bigger turbo def voidds your warranty.

Re. SRT-4 upgrades:
"Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep® vehicle and parts warranties are voided if the vehicle or parts are used for competition. The addition of performance parts does not by itself void a vehicle's warranty. However, added performance parts (parts not originally supplied on the vehicle from the factory) are not covered by the vehicle's warranty, and any failure that they may cause is also not covered by the vehicle's warranty."

As for what if any effect GM's staged upgrades will have on the warranty, we should know November 1.

I bet that stage one 20+ HP raises the redline fuel cut off. That is they only way i could see HP increasing without also increasing TQ.

why is it though that they say stage 1 ups it 20 hp and stage 2 ups it 20 tq. that'd be 225 and 220 then they go on to say that both bring the numbers up to 246hp and 240 tq? thats a gian of 20hp and 20tq for each stage

I would hope mid- high 13's. C&D Ran the SS/SC in 14.4 with the G85 package. I would hope with all those stages we'd atleast see high 13's.

Hmmm...would this be something useful to the 2.2 Ecotec once the S/C comes out for it?? Maybe??? Could be even more promise for the blower and the 2.2!!

Just a thought, could be way off on this one!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

Why bother?

Swap the S/C for a turbo, get some tuning going and throw down more hp than any GM stage ever could?

WHY GM spent so much money, time, man hours on the turbo ecotec racing teams to go with a worthless S/C on a 4 cyl I will never know.

Please, I cant drive one day without seeing some ancient turbo volvo or turbo saab,

Reliability, so you mean SUBARU's ENTIRE lineup is not reliable. NO they just know how to do it right. And all of VW's entire 1.8t universal engine lineup is not reliable?????

When you say GM did it for reliability you really say that GM is too incompetant to build a stoudt turbo engine.......

.....now I know you don't want to imply that, coming off GM's great success with the Grand National(GNX, T-type), Typhoon, Cyclone, and TTA.

How could they be worried about reliability after years of research on the Ecotec drag teams running turbo's??????

One reason for no Turbo........PUSSY........I love seeing people trying to up hp throught their belt driven s/c'd 4cyls. 4cyls that struggle when the AC is being driven, OH YEAH S/C was they way to go on a 4cyl.

i think it is a joke. GM is always a crock of Crap. they never say what they are going to do. just buy a SRT-4. way better. and i bet it is going to cost a arm and a leg. and most certainly if you buy it through a dealer it is going to cost as much as the car does. lol. not that much. but alot.
Re: Chevy Cobalt's Stage 1 & 2

its because the s/c power is liniar when compaired to a turbo

turbos have alot of lag when not done right , and i know alot of subbie owners with autos and the lag on the wrx auto sucks

with a s/c you dont have to worry about lag , you hit the pedal and boost is there on a s/c

plus with a s/c you dont have to worry as much , that someone will over boost the drivetrain , cause it is easier to limit its boost potential

isnt that part of why the wrx got that wonderfull boost lag that causes them to run 17's or slower when you spin the tires off the line , ive seen plenty of the run mid to high 18 sec passes cause the computer pulled the boost away

Teah buy your SRT4 enjoy finding a replacemant head when the one you have craps out
And puhleez don't start with the SRT4 is this or that! Its a G D NEON thats all nothing special at all. And everyone knows what wonders of engineering acheivement those turds are. Chrysler has had nothing but trouble out of that engine and it got worse when they turboed it. Evary single guy I know with an SRT4 has been thru at least 1 head and counless head gaskets. But if this is what you like then knock yourself out.
As for me I prefer being able to drive my car as aposed to pushing it. Whoo Hooo so you beet me in a quarter mile race! Would you like a cookie or perhaps a ride home when your s--t dies on the roed side.
