Chevy Aveo a truck?
Tuesday, July 05, 2005 9:59 AM
I've seen 3 Aveo's recently that had truck liscense plates, one my neighbor rented from Enterprise and two other ones on the road. If Ohio considers these trucks I must be driving a semi. Does GM label these things as trucks? so they can better their CAFE gas mileage.

PT Cruisers are labeled as trucks, i believe. so, it could be possible

I've heard the same thing about PT's also. I think it was in chat that i heard it. The reasoning is that the seats sit level with the cargo area. I am not familiar with the Aveo or the PT, but that's what i've heard.

I found these picture on the Chevy site & it does appear that the cargo & seating area are as level as they can get in the 5-door. It looks sunken down in the back instead of flat in from the rear bumper.

The only thing i can compare this to is my wagon - the cargo area is actually higher up like in a normal car because when you fold the rear seats down the back is equal with the height of the cargo area. It is flat in from the bumper instead of sunken down.

Using that logic though, i'd think mini vans should get a truck tag too. Beats me! Just passing along what i've heard

The PT Cruiser and PT Convertible are considered trucks by the EPA for the reasons Susan mentioned, and one more. Dodge trucks get pathetic gas mileage, mostly due to their extra weight, and larger frontal cross section in comparison to their competition, so Chrysler classified the PTs as trucks so that they could meet CAFE requirements on their truck line without having to design either more aerodynamic shapes, or more efficient engines.

a good friend of mine has an 05 aveo hatchback. ohio registered, no truck plates. never heard of any truck classification for it. although i wouldnt put it past GM to make it an option for the CAFE reqs. also, it might have to do with what the vehicle is used for, ie: commercial or farm use. just guessing here

The truck classification has nothing to do with the way that it is registered, my Durango is registered as a passenger vehicle. The classification is done by the manufacturer, it isn't an option it is a way for GM to get it's CAFE figures.

I know in VA you can get just about anything registered as a truck, for an individual I think you end up paying more taxes but its cheaper for some businesses the way taxes work, course our tax system is so screwed up anyway. Also things registered as trucks aren't inspected the same as passenger vehicles, I know bumper height requirements are different among other things. My jeeps are registered as "multi-purpose vehicles" lol
