My friend has a 98 svt contour. recently, he let someone borrow it. it was returned after a few days after his car was fixed. the next day when my friend went to drive it, it would not engage gear.

here's what it's doing. you can engage any gear without the use of the clutch. it feels like it's going into gear, but is not engaging whatsoever. if you dont use the clutch it wont' stall or jerk, it's just like nothing is happening. crawled under the car. it appears that everything is working correctly as far as linkages are concerned, fluid levels are good.

what could be going on here? broken shift linkages?

pressure plate is probably shot, replace clutch and pressure plate.
