Hey everyone ... have always gotten great opinions from you guys so here I go. I have done the search and found some info but need more.
I am looking to get a Audi TT (40-50K miles) for about $15-17k. I just wanted to know how expensive they are to fix and if it would be worth it to spend that kind of cash for a car with that kind of mileage. Any other info on the car would be nice also.
Also ... what other sports cars would you recommend in that price range?
thanks!!!!!!!
Its not what you got ... its what you do with it! (TUA)
While i do like many of the cars Audi makes i would NEVER own one which was not covered under any warranty.
Typically i would stray away from most of them. With an extended warranty type thing though, you should be ok. I bet you'll know the service manager by first name though.
The TT is an interesting car. Not my taste, but i can see the appeal. Chances are it will similar to fix as most Audis....expensive.
The engineering on those things is so ass backwards sometimes i just don't get it. Parts to fix may be somewhat cheap, but the labor is usually where they get you. For example...the previous gen S4's, in order to replace the turbos, which are already a little too small for their application and prone to breaking, you essentially need to pull the whole engine. You'll also find many mechanics who won't work on them.
As for other suggestions....what kind of car are you looking for? strictly 2 door? fast? good handling? mix of both? Mod-able?
Hmm, I was thinking about a used one as well a while ago and most of the people I talked to about them that actually had one (not the: well my friends dads co worker has one and...) said about the same as subaru about the fixing of them and they also said that they were suprisingly slow for what they are. IMO theyre nice to look at but I dont think I would own one.
Check out my car....

Friends with someone who got rid of hers last year, she HATED it. It was always in teh shop for a number of issues, electrical problems, engine trouble, list goes on and on, she was very happy to get rid of it

Oh please... you know that's what borsty's gonna say and anyone who isn't completely blinded in their fandom can see that a TT is nothing like an F-body.

Wow ... I have heard some problems with the Audi but it seems like I shouldn't even touch the car. I heard most of the problems are electrical not mechanical. I am hoping by buying it used most of those issues will have been taking car of (wishful thinking I know).
I also know that in one of the car magazines (motortrend or car and driver) it was ranked TOP 10 cars of 2001. I can't possible be that bad of a car ... can it? Thanks for your opinions though.
ohh ...subaru25gt, thanks for the advice on warranty.

This can be decieving. If i am not mistaken, this does not really take into account any type of logevity. Its not that Audi doesn't make nice cars, they just tend to be prone to all sorts of problems down the road.
Its too bad Audis have lot of reliability issues, because they have some of the sexiest cars on the road. I personally love the TT, and i have a hot nut for the A4

Sorry.. there's nothing there to even suggest that you were being sarcastic..
Back on topic,
Most of the issues with Audi's lately are carry overs from the issues VW has been having. It really is too bad because they are making some cars that would be awesome if it were for all these reliabilty issues. S4? Mmmmm..

Yeah, i know thats what the F-Body fanboys would say if they had posted in this thread, hence the phrase "read my mind", because i was shocked they hadnt gotten to the thread yet and spewed their ridiculous f-body BS
And whomever said an F-body is a TT anyways??
reading comprehension> you
As far as reliability, because Audi and VW are pretty much the same, all the issues that VW's have pretty much carry over. My gf's best friend has an 00 A4, and while that car is beautiful and drives like a dream, shes had it for a year and has spent a ton of money on it for things that have went wrong. One time it was as silly as something happened with the elctrical system and she couldnt get into her car, someting with the alarm and the locking system. SHes already had to replace the clutch and braking parts, and she doesnt drive the car hard at all, only on the highway, back and forth to Chicago. She also had a problem with the window as well
Funny.. the only person to mention an F-bod was someone that didn't have it.
TT's are okay cars, but they're prone to the same reliability and servicing problems that 1.8T equipped cars have. The Quattro system is good, but I don't know about the current generation's longevity.

Ridiculous F-Body BS?
Watch out now.
Hating on the F-Body... this isn't even an F-Body thread... get your ego's and check and leave the F-Body out of your arguments. It didn't do anything to you guys. Poor ol' innocent under rated 300rwhp LS1 F-bodies...

^^hes not talking about you
personally for the money i dont think the TT is worth it....unless your rich
i hear all these bad problems with audi's, and all the mags say it, but my friends mom has a 01 A5 or something and its closing up on 50 thousand miles with not one problem yet
How much is a new Mazda 3? If you don't have a big ego that might be one route to take.
On the other hand, if you are concerned with people looking at your car while you are driving from point a to b, it might be too ordinary.
Owning VW/Audis is simple. You buy the car, knowing it has some potential problems, and are willing to fix them. If you dont have the time, patience, money to do so, then look for something else. They're great cars if you take care of them and are willing to put in a little work.

That is the same thing a couple of my friends say that own VW's / Audi's. They are always the ones that have the most problems when we get together but they know how to fix it.
As for the TT, I personally don't care for the car at all. I just think there are some things about it I don't care for.
Other sports cars that you could find around the price range you are asking?
-e36 BMW M3's
-Early S4's (found some for sale around the 17-19k price range)
-S2000's (found a couple locally going for 17k)
-f-bodies
That is all I could think off the top of my head. Are you looking for a sports car or just something that can go fast? If that is the case, there are plenty of other ways you can go if you are looking to spend 15K. In the end, you could probably save yourself some money too.
Have a good one,
Justin

LOL! Im not hating on the F-Body, just commenting on how when everyone asks which car should i get, how a bunch of people say F-Body, even when its not a choice
And neither am I'm just tired of everytime someone coming along asking for suggestions on cars to get the f-body seems to inevitably come up. If what they are looking for is the most RWD HP and potential RWD HP for the money then I've got no problem recommending to someone that they get an f-body.
I'm sorry winm1, I've caused your thread to go off topic with my off hand comment.
Audi's and VWs were excellent cars not that long ago but lately their reliability has gone down the tubes.
S2K's can be had for 17K? Wow.. I don't think they go for anything near that (converted to CAD) here.

S2000 are typically a little higher than 17k. You can probably find one, but most of them in good condition are going to be closer to 20+.
I would take this over the TT in a hearbeat, much better car all around. Not quite the tq of a TT, but the tranny is wonderfull and a high reving engine can certainly be enjoyable at times.
