The company that should not be over looked.
Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd., South Korea's largest automaker, just opened its first U.S. car assembly plant. Located in Montgomery, Ala., the $1.1 billion facility has been under construction since 2002. The plant is scheduled to produce 300,000 vehicles per year at full capacity. Its first product is the new 2006 Sonata sedan.
Named Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMMA), the facility employs more than 2,000 people and draws components from sixty-four suppliers throughout North America, the company said in a news release.
The 2 million square foot manufacturing plant occupies 1,744 acres of land and includes a stamping facility, paint shop, vehicle assembly shop, a two-mile test track and an engine shop, where the all-new Hyundai 3.3-liter V-6 engine is produced.
Since 2001, Hyundai says, it has invested more than $200 million in design and testing facilities throughout the U.S. with a $30 million design center in Irvine, Calif., a $60 million proving ground in California City, Calif., and a $117 million technical center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Hyundai has seen its U.S. sales soar by 364 percent over the last six years, becoming the fourth largest import brand in the process. It sold 418,615 vehicles in the United States last year.
To build its Alabama plant, Hyundai received $252.8 million in tax breaks, worker training, road improvements and other incentives from state and local governments, Reuters reported. Alabama officials have said the jobs that the plant creates will justify the incentives.
Ironically, Chung Se-yung, the founder of Hyundai Motor, died of pneumonia in Seoul, South Korea, the day after his company's first U.S. plant was dedicated. He was 77.

at this point, I don't care what company is it, and where its owners are from, we need more of things like this!
Amen to both! Good little cars/SUV's. Never had a problem with ours.
hyundai builds a very good car
Not a big fan of their cars but at least they're giving back to our economy, wish we could say the same for the domestics.
<img src="http://www.geocities.com/fudd_22602/elmer-shoot.gif"> Old school Js rock

Hyundai has really kicked it into high gear... They're doing good work, and they've made big strides in the quality dept. I'd release a new Pony just to thumb the nose at the rest of the world, but then again, I've got bigger plans for world domination.

They got everyones attention whrn the '04 Sonata was named the most reliable car made last year beating out the second place Civic.
i wonder if they used US steel , or if they used hyundai steel to make the plat , LOL
to think they started with a crap box , with a junk motor and some had the mitsu 2.0 dohc motor , lol
ive really liked the 03 -up tibbies , also part of the reason i got a set of seats from the GT tiiby for my cav , just gotta make up brackets for them now
eric enjoy the black leather seats in the az heat..
mine suck i went to get into the tib on my lunch break and almost jumped out of my car the seats were so hot.

This is a good move that will benefit Hyundai as well as our economy. It seems the little car company that couldn't is finally doing it. Despite the stigma formally associated with their cars... I have to say, I never had a problem when I owned my '99 Accent GL. They can be quite reliable and if the other auto brands aren't careful, Hyundai will sneak right up their near the top with the rest of the big dogs in no time.

well they are already up there with toyota on build quality.

hehe. our first new car was a 1986 Hyundai Pony.
I was 11 at the time, and still can't forget the bad
build quality, BUT it was a fun car just the same.
it was great for camping trips and cheap on gas.
... I still remember the extra options on our Pony:
ours had the 70hp engine (over 55hp?), velour/
vinyl seat trim over the 100% vinyl trim, 14" wheel
covers, and a rear wiper. I remember it didn't have
a stereo nor was it wired for speakers. The paint
was extremely poor too. Our 15lbs dog jumped on
the rear hatch one day (he left a few barely visible
marks), and that section was rusted-over a few
months later.

?????
first off. Kia is from South Korea not North Korea,
and technically, america is not at war with North Korea.. they
just like calling them names like "axis of evil" but that's about
it I think. America kinda sent too many innocent soliders to
the wrong part of the planet.
In any case, I'm content being a Polish-Canadian driving an
American made Jeep... and besides, cars are cars no matter
where they come from. Deal with it.

Yeah Borsty, you know how it really went down. A bunch of South Koreans got together and said "Hey, you know what would be funny? Let's make a car company whose name in english would be the acronym for soldiers who were killed in the war, in which we were on the US's side". Those damn Koreans. The first page of the Kia owner's manual says "The name Kia comes from Ki, the Korean word for 'to rise up' and A, short for Asia. So, the name means 'to rise up from Asia'."
We've got an '03 Spectra sitting right behind my car right now. It cost $8995 new. It's about equally equipped to my Sunfire (less A/C), gets about the same mileage, and is overall a nice car. And it came with a 10 year/100K mile warranty. The interior is especially room for such a cheap car, and nicely put together. My brother has become the primary driver of it as of late, and his friends refer to it as "Andy's surprisingly nice car".
Normally, I agree with the things you say. But then, I see a post of yours like this, and you look just as bad as the people you make fun of.
05 Sunfire, Ecotec, 5 speed, Electric Blue
I mean, I like you too Bortsy, but give it a break. I was born
in Poland (before I moved to Canada), and I'm not about to
cut into the entire German nation for invading Poland and
killing so many innocent people. The hate has to stop with
somebody (this planet runs a deficit on understanding).
Kia's and Hyundai's go hand-in-hand with each other. Some
of their products are merely reasonable while some are
rather spectacular (the same could be said for GM right?)
<A HREF="http://www.j-body.org/members/urbanyan/"><IMG SRC="http://www.j-body.org/registry/urbanyan/thumbnail_personal_pic.jpg" BORDER=0></A>
i hate imports, and i never wont, so if u dont like it, i dont care.
reguardless, we had a war there, not with them, but on their soil.
its like us making a car company named GOOK.

If I have to pin-point when Hyundai started doing really well in the US market and started getting recognition, I say when Hyundai announced the best warranty in the auto industry, which was back in 2000 or 2001 I believe and ever since then Hyundai has been steadily flying up.
I said it a couple of threads in the past, in 10-15 years if their trend continues, they will be where Honda is today.
More-so, Hyundai today is following the same trend that Honda did in the 80's, which is why Hyundai is so successful today.
One good move Hyundai did was to not use Mitsubishi motors and start using their own, which is why their reliability is skyrocketing upwards.
What do you guys think of the idea instead of GM buying Daewoo, they should have bought Hyundai instead?
>>>For Sale? Clicky!<<<
-----The orginal Mr.Goodwrench on the JBO since 11/99-----
i do not think gm should have bought hyundai at ALL
if this happened you can kiss the great warranty good bye. no way gm would allow that one. at least imo
---------
also the better warranty would not have been the clencher in starting hyundai on there way up hill. i believe it was more in 2002 as they worked on there company redesign and all the new models right after they seperated from any joints with mitsu.
they released all there new 2003 cars one including the tiburon which got RAVE reviews for its class and the sedan that got best initial quality in class.
i beleive the seperation from mitsu is what spawned the uprising of their popularity and build quality. the warranty just pushes people over the edge if they were still considering buying somethign else.
just imo
