OK! so here's the story, i currently have the Chevy Cobalt SS (rally yellow) on hold at a chevrolet dealer close to me, I currently have a 2002 cavalier ls sport, that's yellow with a few mods, do you think that I should get the cobalt? soome people are saying that I shouldn't, i'm not sure why but they are- please give me feedback on what you think that I should do. Thanks, it's only on hold for another week or so...thanks a lot! (ps- i would obviously be trading in my cavalier for it ) and it has only 41,000 miles on it good shape

Well your car has only 41k and no problems you said. You probably have made a lot of the payments already.

Secondly it is a really bad idea to buy a car the first year it is made.

Take for example the Ford Contour 95-00, the 95s were absolutely nothing but junk, they improved everything over the five years that needed to be done, stil wernt good cars but the 00s were better than the 95s.

I would wait till 07 before buying a Cobalt in my opinion, same goes for G6.

Exactly. It's not really a good idea to buy first year production cars because thats the time the manufactur will find the defects and problems that may occur with the car. If you buy next years production then they will/should have fixed whatever the problems happened in the first year production. Your best bet would be to keep the cav for like a year or two then move onto the Cobalt if you wish.

Rarerly are there significant problems with a new car by a company as large as GM. Yes the contour had problems, but isn't that a rehash of another ford car anyways? I mean look at the engine is a ecotec the transmissions not something that they are testing out and we have already heard leaps and bounds that the cobalt is of better build quality.....

And thats what warrantys are good for.

Also retail value of the cavalier in a year will be horribly pathetic... I say go with the cobalt.

Your payments will prob. go up a lot. Make your existing car faster.

I vote get the cobalt....they're right up above...the engine isn't even remotely some new design (contour was for example) the tranny is something they pulled out of the parts bin...now if it was the new 2.4L vvt, I would probably hold off...but being that most everything major on this car is from a Saab (brakes, motor, tranny if I remember right) not too much to be afraid of. If the payments are reasonable, and they're giving you a good deal, I'd hop on the SS

Only trade if what they give you for trade is the same or higher than the payoff on your loan. It isn't smart to roll negative equity into a new car. I did and regret every minute of it.

Best thing you can do is test drive the Cobalt SS and decide for yourself

If you plan on keeping the Cavalier for a while, its worth going with the Cobalt by far. Around 60K miles things start to go on J-bodies, due to the simple fact that they are relatively cheap, low quality vehicles. The Cobalt is far superior in build quality and refinement, all you have to do is sit in one to notice that.

Overall the Cobalt is a much better car than a Cavalier could ever be. But as the others said, you have to consider the cost difference - pay more now (Cobalt), or pay for more repairs later (Cavalier). If you can afford it, I'd say go with the Cobalt.

Check out the SS S/C thoroughly, and let us know what you decide

^probably a bad place to talk about cavaliers being cheap and poorly built, but anyways i love my cobalt so far, and its got a surprisingly smooth ride and quiet, comparable to other higher priced cars out there, very solid feel to it also

^^Yep^^

If anything, unless you are "brand loyal" you should shop around more, there are way better cars for the money.
