-Strong value – more content and best-in-class fuel economy without an increase in price

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERIOR FUEL ECONOMY

The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-litre Gamma 4-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and an estimated best-in-class 4.7 L/100 km highway fuel economy rating.

The engine’s most notable feature is its use of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power, and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for further improvements in efficiency, fuel economy, and emissions. To optimize breathing at all engine speeds, a Variable Induction System (VIS) is employed. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent timing chain.

Several other systems have been improved over the outgoing model, each contributing to increased fuel efficiency. All models feature 6-speed automatic or manual transmissions with well-spaced ratios for smooth and efficient power delivery. Low-rolling resistance silica tires and a slippery shape (0.30 cd) reduce friction with the road and the air. Finally, the ActiveECO function modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response. By turning on the ActiveECO function, drivers can realize up to a seven percent increase in real-world fuel economy. The real-world result of these efficiencies is an estimated highway driving range of 915 km.

Despite the additional content, safety features, and technology packed into the all-new Accent, Hyundai has avoided the typically associated penalty of increased weight. A lower curb weight corresponds to an improvement not only in fuel economy, but all other dynamic areas. In fact, Accent offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class by far, providing drivers with both low fuel consumption and responsive performance

SAFETY AS STANDARD – BECAUSE IT JUST MAKES SENSE

Hyundai doesn’t believe that consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features are included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Active front head restraints and seatbelt pretensioners work in conjunction with the airbag system to aid in preventing injury.

The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism. The vehicle’s structure distributes the force of an impact in three ways to minimize floor deformation and maintain the integrity of the cabin.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control work together to help deliver confident handling in all conditions. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) integrates control of the ESC and motor-driven power steering (MDPS) to provide handling assistance in slippery conditions or in sudden cornering scenarios. The system can deliver up to 8 Newton-meters of counter-steering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact segment to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles so as to maximize stopping ability. In the event of a panic stop, BA ensures that maximum braking force is applied.

SMALL OUTSIDE, BIG INSIDE

Accent rides on a 2,570 mm wheelbase and is 1,700 mm in width, representing an increase of 70 mm and 5 mm respectively over the outgoing model. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. Total length of the new model is 4,370 mm for 4-door versions and 4,115 mm for the 5-door. While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent with those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by Transport Canada as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. To provide perspective, Accent 4-door features more total interior volume than the Honda Civic.

Convenient storage spaces are included throughout the cabin, including bottle holders in each door and a storage tray at the base of the centre console. A deluxe centre console is available, a feature not seen on Fit, Aveo, Fiesta, or Mazda2. Split and fold 60/40 rear seats are available for increased cargo flexibility when transporting longer items.

FEATURES AND AMENITIES WORTHY OF MORE EXPENSIVE VEHICLES

Choosing a subcompact sedan no longer means foregoing comfort and convenience features. A standard 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and standard tilt steering wheel work in conjunction to provide a comfortable driving position. Power door locks, standard on all Accent models, can be paired with the convenience of available power windows, remote keyless entry, and power heated mirrors. A 4-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with iPod / USB / AUX ports is standard equipment. Those seeking added listening enjoyment can opt for a 6-speaker, 172 watt AM/FM/XM/CD audio system featuring Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and steering wheel audio controls. Cruise control, air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power sunroof are all available.

CONFIDENT HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS

The first step toward confident handling dynamics is a rigid structure. To this end, the 2012 Accent employs high-tensile strength steel for a structure which is 22 percent stiffer than the previous generation and 38 percent stiffer than the Toyota Yaris. Increasing the stiffness of the structure allowed Hyundai engineers more flexibility in terms of suspension tuning. The end result is a better balance between handling precision and ride comfort. Accent employs a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs, twin-tube gas shock absorbers, and a 21 mm stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is a torsion axle setup with coil springs and monotube shock absorbers.

ATTRACTIVE DESIGN

The 2012 Accent joins the Hyundai line-up sporting the company’s increasingly popular Fluidic Sculpture design. The vehicle’s exterior lines are intended to be futuristic, dynamic, and sleek. In a segment typically associated with staid designs, Accent stands out from the crowd. While the styling provides an attractive form, it’s also functional, featuring a slippery 0.30 coefficient of drag. Five-door models include a sporty trunk lid-mounted spoiler. For an assertive stance, 16” alloy wheels are available.

Boy, that 5-door sure is a funky little thing. I dig it.
The sedan is decent.....but there's something about it i just can't put my finger on it...that i just don't like. Not sure what it is, but it's not ugly, but also not pretty either. I'm thinking it's because i looks like a squished up cartoon version of the Sonata.

Is it me or does it look like Hyundai has become a one-hit wonder when it comes to the styling of their sedans (excluding Genesis & Equus). The styling of the Sonata has been a huge success and will admit is a very nice looking sedan (hell I own a 2011) but it seems instead of creating a separate identity for their other cars they seem content to just pass those looks down to other models that are below the Sonata in the model line up. It's like they're saying, how much smaller can we make the Sonata or how much can we plagiarize from our own design. It's like they are uninspired or unmotivated to do anything else because this works. Maybe I'm being too critical but it would have been nice if these cars in their line up had something of their own identity rather than Sonatas being hit with shrink ray.

Of the two, I definitely like the hatchback better. It makes me wonder what it'd look like as a two door if they were to make one.

So what do the mpg numbers equate to in U.S. stats. I figure a car like the Accent would get like low to mid 40s on the highway if the new Elantra and Velostar are project to get low 40s on the highway.

It is called family resemblance, and really it is not a new concept by any means. Germany loves to this with Audi, Mercedes, BMW. Loss of creativity... I think so, but atleast you can say it doesn't look like something outside of your nameplate.

Also it is projected to get 4.7 L/100 km highway and 6.4 L/100 km regardless of whether you choose the 6-speed automatic or manual. That works out to an incredible 50-mpg highway and 37-mpg city. Those numbers are, however, imperial and in the U.S. you’re looking at closer to 41-mpg and 30.5 mpg.

Weight from Hyundai with US conversion:
Vehicle Curb Weight (kg) M/T Horsepower Power-to-weight ratio (kg / HP)
Hyundai Accent 4-door 1,087 138 7.88 <<<2396lbs
Hyundai Accent 5-door 1,102 138 7.99 <<<2429lbs
Honda Fit 1,119 117 9.56 <<<2466lbs
Ford Fiesta 1,151 120 9.59 <<<2537lbs
Toyota Yaris 1,040 106 9.81 <<<2292lbs
Nissan Versa 5-door (1.8L) 1,222 122 10.02 <<<2694lbs
Mazda 2 1,043 100 10.43 <<<2279lbs
Nissan Versa 4-door (1.6L) 1,150 107 10.75 <<<2535lbs
Chevrolet Aveo 1,165 108 10.79 <<<2568lbs

And this would be the car I was talking about in the other thread that would break the chain of cheapness in terms of rear brakes.
Also take note on the power rating... and it doesn't use a turbo either! Yhea, Hyundai is impressive to say the least.

In my personal opinion, WAY too much distance between the wheel well and the top of the hood/trunk. And to go along with the tiny fenders are wheels that are much too tiny for the car.

I like the rear end, but not digging the front. The head lights throw it off from the creases in the doors... Meh.
The numbers look nice though. And the 4 wheel disk brakes thing is pretty sweet. The drier's arm rest is a nice feature not found in many cars. I lean to the right side and having that arm rest would make it more comfortable for me. I like the dash lines too. but the seats look cheap compared to the dash, and panels.

Good for them making a 1.6L engine that does 4.7L/100 km and 138 HP. Stock for stock, I could see it competing well on the track with base model civics and corollas, and the Cruze turbo. They seem to be trying really hard to get into the compact tuner scene lately. The Genesis has done well, but I don't think people are going to take the accent seriously.

It'd be a great car for a bad driver, though. The doors come pre-dented. Whoever designed this car must either be trying to make some sort of ironic statement that no one gets, or is in desperate need of cataract surgery.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERIOR FUEL ECONOMY

The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and a best-in-class standard 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel economy rating.

The engine’s most notable feature is its use of GDI, a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for increased efficiency, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, variable induction system and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent roller timing chain. The Gamma also uses innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

Gamma highlights include:

-Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT)
-D-CVVT (intake and exhaust camshaft phaser) camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts provide optimum power, efficiency and refinement. Using CVVT on both camshafts has several advantages when compared to using it only on the intake camshaft including an improvement in performance (increased volumetric efficiency) and fuel economy (reduced pumping loss), and a reduction in hydrocarbon emissions
-Roller Timing Chain. Helps increase the reliability of the Gamma 1.6-liter engine.
-Electronic Throttle Control. This system accurately controls air intake and engine torque, improving drivability, response and fuel economy.
Innovative Anti-Friction Coatings
-A Diamond Like Coating (DLC) was added to the tappets to help reduce friction in the valvetrain.
Working together, the complete range of engine technologies produce an engine that offers:
-Best-in-class specific output at 86 horsepower per liter
-Excellent fuel economy
-Low emissions with ULEV certification
-High reliability backed by a 10-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty

Several other systems have been improved over the outgoing model, each contributing to increased fuel efficiency. The 2012 Accent can be equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transaxle with SHIFTRONIC manual control, delivering smooth and efficient power delivery. Low-rolling resistance silica tires and a slippery shape (0.30 cd) reduce friction with the road and the air. This aerodynamic shape also includes a kicked up trunk edge, wheel arches which shield the tires and an optimized engine undercover. Finally, the ActiveECO function modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response. By turning on the ActiveECO function, drivers can realize up to a seven percent increase in real-world fuel economy.

ActiveECO Function
Despite the additional content, safety features and technology packed into the all-new Accent, Hyundai has avoided the typically associated penalty of increased weight. A low curb weight corresponds to an improvement not only in fuel economy but all other dynamic areas. In fact, Accent offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class by far, providing drivers with both low fuel consumption and responsive performance. Highlights which contribute to a low curb weight include the 1.6-liter Gamma GDI engine with aluminum block that is more powerful and 40 lbs lighter than the outgoing 1.6-liter Alpha engine, monotube shock absorbers, integrated parking brake and a super flat torque converter.

40 MPG – AN 18 PERCENT IMPROVEMENT IN FUEL ECONOMY
The 2012 Accent’s highway fuel economy of 40 mpg is an 18 percent improvement over its predecessor’s 34 mpg highway manual transmission fuel economy rating.

Accent’s fuel economy is 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, with the six-speed automatic transmission or manual transmission. These figures give Accent a highway-only driving range of up to 456 miles.

SAFETY

Hyundai doesn’t believe consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features is included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Accent’s new standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Active front head restraints are not available on Fiesta, Yaris, Aveo or Mazda2.

The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism and the rear doors have internal beams.

The system can deliver up to eight Newton-meters of counter-steering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

Vehicle Stability Management
A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact segment to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard equipment. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles to maximize stopping ability. In the event of a panic stop, BA ensures that maximum braking force is applied.

All Accents ride on a 101.2 inch wheelbase, 2.8-inches longer than the previous generation. The 66.9-inch width on all 2011 models increased by 0.2 inches for 2012. The Accent 4-door’s overall length has increased by 3.5 inches to 172 inches. Total length of the new five-door version is 162 inches. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent with those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by the EPA as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta are classified as subcompact cars. In addition the Accent five-door has best-in-class cargo volume and more cargo capacity than the Nissan Juke and Infiniti EX 35 crossover. The Accent has best-in-class front and rear shoulder room and the five-door also has more cargo volume than many of its compact five-door competitors.

Convenient storage spaces are included throughout the cabin, including bottle holders in the front doors and a storage tray at the base of the center console. A sliding armrest storage console is available, which is a segment first. Split and fold 60/40 rear seats are standard for increased cargo flexibility when transporting longer items. Not only does Accent have multiple storage areas, but it delivers more useable storage capacity.

CONFIDENT DRIVING DYNAMICS

The first step toward confident driving dynamics is a rigid structure. To this end, the 2012 Accent employs high-tensile strength steel to deliver a strong, light and stiff body which is 22 percent stiffer than the previous generation. Increasing the stiffness of the structure allowed Hyundai engineers more flexibility in terms of suspension tuning. The end result is a better balance between handling precision and ride comfort. Accent employs a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and twin-tube gas shock absorbers. The rear suspension is a torsion axle setup with coil springs and monotube shock absorbers.

All Accents have column-mounted, motor-driven electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. Accent’s turning diameter of 34.1 feet is better than Versa, Fiesta and Fit. The SE five-door model has a unique steering calibration for a sportier feel.

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN

The 2012 Accent joins the Hyundai line-up sporting the company’s increasingly popular “Fluidic Sculpture” design. The vehicle’s exterior lines are intended to be futuristic, dynamic, and sleek. In a segment typically associated with staid designs, Accent stands out from the crowd. While the styling provides an attractive form, it’s also functional, featuring a slippery 0.30 coefficient of drag for Accent sedan and .31 for Accent five-door. Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and detailed swept-back headlights give Accent a compact athletic face. Five-door SE models include a sporty roof-mounted spoiler and vertical taillights. For an assertive stance, 16-inch alloy wheels are available on GLS and standard on SE.

COLOR PALETTE

The 2012 Accent GLS is available with gray or beige two-tone interior. The five-door GS and SE trims are available with a gray interior or a monotone black interior. All Accents have cloth-like pillar trim made of fibrous tissue and volcanic rock for a premium look and feel.

The Accent features a bold exterior color palette with both light and dark colors including Century White, Ironman Silver, Cyclone Gray, Ultra Black, Boston Red, Mocha Bronze, Marathon Blue, Clearwater Blue and Electrolyte Green.

FEATURES AND AMENITIES WORTHY OF MORE EXPENSIVE CARS

Choosing a subcompact sedan no longer means foregoing comfort and convenience features. The 2012 Accent will be offered in three trim levels. The affordable four-door GLS, the versatile, well equipped five-door GS and the sporty five-door SE. The entry level Accent three-door has been discontinued for the 2012 model year.

Honestly I'm pretty surprised they still make the Accent. size and content wise it's pretty close to the Elantra just seems to me to be a bit unnecessary to me. I could understand if they re-engineered it to be a tiny car like the Fiesta, Fit or Mazda 2. But it looks a little bigger than those cars too.

The Elantra is considered a mid-size by EPA's interior measurement, while being a compact on the outside. Same theory goes for the Accent, inside has the volume of a compact while being the size of a sub-compact outside. That strategy is very popular among the Koreans, even Cruze uses that strategy as Daewoo had a part in its design.
The Accent is deemed small, smaller than the Elantra. What it's more is that, the 2012 Accent will weigh in 2396lbs and 2430lbs for the 4-door and 5-door respectively. Again, no "compact" is that light when 2012 model year comes around.
But I get what you are saying, just about every model is getting bigger with every model change. That's the mentality our society has: "bigger is better." So that theory is put down on their cars. But Subaru's Impreza is exactly the same size as the outgoing model, only diffrence is it weighs in about 160lbs less.

I see. I just thought as brilliant as Hyundai has been lately it seemed weird they would offer a vehicle that could so easily cannibalize sales from another model. But as i look at the pictures better i guess i can see it could very well be about the size of a Honda Fit.

Those "swirves" they put on the side remind me a lot of the same thing from the 1st generation Tiburon. I don't really like that part.
