Building a Mini-Trike
Sunday, October 31, 2010 9:03 AM
A couple buddies and I were tossing around the idea of building a Mini-trike from the ground up after a couple of shots the other night =P.

Then we picked up a 6.5 HP OHV motor on sale at Harbor Freight for a hundred bucks...

Between the 3 of us, I'm sure we have enough experience to finish the job, but none of us have ever built anything close to a bike. Does anyone have any suggestions on parts retailers or just suggestions in general?

I'm not sure the kind of response JBO will have for this, but I'd post pictures along the way if anyone's interested. It'll be a budget thing for sure. After all, none of us have a whole lot of money to play with, especially for a toy lol. Just something to do on poker night =P

We have welded up some mini bike frames in the past, I'll see if I can find any pics. Our main thing with small engines are go-karts though

Pictures would be great. What type of material did you use?

Ill get some pics of the motor up here in a bit. It should do the job.

maybe you could start with an old bicycle frame. almost make it like a motorized big wheel that would be pretty cool. keep us posted sounds fun.

I would check out this site: motorbicycling.com
There's a lot of good info there.

Well, as per manufacturer suggestion, we broke in the motor for a couple hours yesterday. Sounds to be decently powerful, and started on the first pull =P

We have a couple of ideas i wanted some input on, so i'll see what you guys think. First off, our front end (as far as the steering/suspension goes) will come straight from a high quality mountain bike. This includes the struts on either size to help absorb road bumps. It will also save us a couple bucks along the way. The smooth rotation via bearing (or whatever is inside) cant be beat for free =)

Also, our crank sprocket is also going to be borrowed from a mountain bike. It was a 21 speed, and the 3 main pedal gears will allow us to utilize the engines low end torque to get going, and then switch to speed gears. To do this, we will again use the thumb shifter mechanism from the donor bike, which guides the chain to the desired gear. Oh, and the tensioner will obviously be used as well, to make up for the slack in chain.

We've been going back and forth between a rear mounted engine, and a center mountain engine. Ive included a couple bored in school sketches to illustrate how we would go about doing both. The center mounted motor would be unique, and better for weight control as well. We would need to do many things to compensate for engine heat near our legs as well as bending an exhaust to the rear of the trike without risk of burn. We could play with other things like Peg placement too.

Any input? Obviously keep in mind that the sketches are in NO way dimensionally accurate.

I would go with rear mounted engine. just imagine the chain breaking and slapping you in the nuts.
I think it would look pretty cool with this seat from jegs jegs seat

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA.... so true.

And the jegs seat is cheap and perfect imo.

Tadaa =P

Sheet metal/aluminum cover. It would cover all areas exposed to head including legs, as well as chest and face area. Its kind of a wrap. We also could design a chain cover like those on kid's biked. All made of strong enough material of course. Also, the engine isnt s large as the sketch depicts. It is smaller and will sit farther up toward the front of the trike.

Can't find any pics yet, But it was built off of an old cushman frame with a 5 hp B&S, and front forks extended 2 1/2 ft.

Couldn't handle for @!#$ haha

Steel and aluminum conduct heat. Now the cover will burn your nuts instead of the engine.

But I do think this is a really cool project. Can't wait to see pics.

Lol.. I have ZERO expierience with metals, welding, or materials. So I'm learning along the way =P.. Obviously.

We just picked up some free mechanical slotted disc brakes and some suspension components. Pics to follow.

that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra

Tthere has to be some sort of insulator that we can use to control the heat. Ideas?[*]

Re: Building a Mini-Trike

why waste so much money? just put the engine in the back like a go cart. if you put it towards the front you will also have to deal with a chain or drive line running between your legs. so not only will you burn your balls you will lose your penis when the chain breaks or comes off.

now go get a cheap go kart that needs a motor, chop the front off, fab the front to a trike form, install your motor and enjoy.

Lol. Rear-mounted it is.

Back to the drawing board.
The frame is going to be coming together on poker night this weekend. Pics on Saturday =)
