why drop a lt in it when you can get a 5.3 ls series cheap....then throw a tt56 behind it for some more fun.
I dont know what planet you live on but LS engines are not cheap an neither are T56 transmissions. The LT1 will bolt up to the S-10 transmission and im getting the LT1, transmission, wiring harness, v-8 swap motor mounts, and headers for $700. Find me a LS motor, T56 transmission, with a wiring harness for that cheap and i will do it.

this is true. the LT-1 does have potential for big power
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
I wasn't even aware they made ss s trucks
actually, they only badged them as SS till 97, it was basically a zq8 truck with bucket seats and badges, (theres a few little things on top of that, but not much) but they are pretty rare
and an lt1 is a nice enough motor, they sound amazing, and if 500hp is the goal, that can be easily accomplished
Whats the difference between an ss and an eXtreme
My one college roommate had a 91ish blazer with a stock LT-1 & auto tranny. After he grenaded the stock rear for the 3rd time he swapped to a Ford 9".

-Boosted LS1?
-Richmond ROD 6-speed(will get sometime)
-Posi 12-bolt(built w/eaton posi unit and richmond 3.73 gears)
-Disc brake and 5 lug swap
+little extras
the ls engine he is talking about is out of the trucks. either that or a 6.0 would be a great upgrade, more tuneable than the lt1 and probably more available as well with 10 years of trucks with the motors equipped.
ok being an fbody and Ls based motor fanatic....i am gonna jump in and shed a lil light for u....
first off i do wanna say its a really nice truck adn hell i would love to find me one...that said....
the LT1 is a terribly underpowered and full of headaches motor...the optispark being one of the main ones...yes this is fixed with a coilpack conversion but add that into the cost of everything and its not worth it...
yes LS1/6 motors may be a lil out of the price range...HOWEVER....u could go to a junkyard, find an LQ4 or LQ9 which is essentially the same thing as an LS1 but its a 5.3 liter and came in GM trucks, throw a set of headers on and get an LS6 intake manifold and get a built 4L60E with harness and all ready to drop in for maybe 150 200 bucks more than ur LT1 plan....
the added benefit would be obviously a more reliable motor (i know being that i have owned more fbodys than most people have changes of underwear) also u can if using the LQ4 get a lower compression which that motor responds fantastic to boost....so that could be an option down the road....
yes it is all up to u but if u honestly want a nice reliable v8 swap i would def go with something other than an LT....there is a reason GM replaced it...
hope that sheds a lil light
2003 LS SPORT: suspension and brake upgrades for now...motor and boost coming son
2008 Cobalt SS/TC: the fast car
I just checked back on this thread, and ^Mike Asher said everything about the 5.3/6.0 ls series motors I wanted to say....and Deals are out there, you just have to keep a close eye on car-part.com, ls1tech, performancetrucks.net and the other fan boy sites and you'll get what you need.

Very interesting and informative! I was thinking about those motors but never really considered one for the swap. Will look into both motors a lil more, a few questions, i woud still be able to use the s-10 Transmission i believe it has a 4L60E, and are either of these motors compadible with HP Tuners, also how much power would a set up like you described make?
i will be updateting this thread with progress and pics this continues. Still waiting to get the stupid truck into my gargae..

I dont know if the 4l60e off a4.3 v6 will have the same bell housing pattern of the ls series motors. the stock 5.3 has 290hp iirc and they are covered with hpt so the sky is the limit. Your hp goal of 500hp is that all motor, boosted, or on a bottle? oh and do you have to deal with emmisions where you live? sorry for being so vauge im posting from my phone
I want to get boosted in the future but will proboly run it while n/a, because this swap is going to cost me enough. I also have some more plans for the cav before i boost the truck. Right now im just debating if i want to go with a turbo or a centrifigal. Both should be prity easy to get, but a turbo setup will probolly cost alot more. Thats another thing thats got me interested in the LQ, As Mike said, the LQ4 has lower compression i think i saw 9.4:1 compared to a LT1's compression of 10.4:1, The LQ4 is sounding like alot better of an idea. No i dont have to deal with emissions where i live been driving without a cat for like 2 years, just got one put on recently thou couldnt take the rasp anymore.

may as well go v8 friggin cash for clunkers killed the junkyard engine market, friggin congress, just dooo ittttt. maybe drop some gta snowflake rims on it (not sure if 2wd can, i forget)
i put an lq4 in my c10 its not finished yet but i did all the wiring put a 4l80e trans in it and bought the motor for 700$
quicklilcav- i wasnt sure if the 4l60 from the 4.3 would bolt up to an LS series v8. im sure with a transdapt plate it might. iirc the 4.3 and gen 1&2 v8s have the same bellhousing bolt patterns. I'll look into it more when im not posting from my cell. If im mistaken feel free to correct me
