i friggin love how GM goes to capitalize on toyotas recall..... annnnnnd now this! haha
Meh. It's no big...electric power steering is a new technology, and some hiccups are inevitable.
As someone very close to the Cobalt market, I can tell you it's a very small issue.
Not even CLOSE to Toyota's current torture

if someone cant steer a car with out power steering , they shouldnt drive !!!!!!!!!!!!! plus it always felt like the ELECTRIC PS never worked any way , so it shouldnt make a difference if it worked or not

Whether being Toyota, GM or whatever, the problem I foresee is a (possible) less sales on automobiles that are built here and it could give a dent to the US auto plants as a whole. All these foreign and domestics companies provide a tremendous amount of jobs to America. If slower sales occur because of this, what do we expect to happen next? All because a CEO decides to cheapen a part to save money and maximize profit or because a engineer did not do the calculations or R&D correctly?
News like these are not good, and at times it can drive up the used car market; a market that does give as much of an impact to the nation as does the new car market.

Steering a car without power steering is fine, but have you ever steered a car without electric power steering when it was such equipped?
Besides, if you hate GM so bad aren't you preaching to the wrong crowd.
i haven't had any problems with my 2007 G5 GT i have 45k on it and do about 1000 miles every 2 weeks. steering it still tight and never failed me and have have had to do some quick turns to avoid things in the road and it turns on a dime. ill wait and see what happens till then not worried so what if you have to put some muscle into turning the car. pull it over to the side of the road and call road side help.
wow 11 cases in accidents, thats so many you know compared to the million of them built
It will get more press than actually have any effect on anyone
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
thats 11 cases too many. with the huge hard on GM and all the fan boys have about the cobalt, youd think it would be perfect
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Perfection? I thought that was something only the Japanese were capable of.
Oh, wait a minute...

Actually... on my GTP I can tell you that an oil leak is what caused my engine to catch on fire. Enough oil came out that the exhaust manifold ended up burning it up and it lit on fire. I know this because there was a close enough fire extinguisher when it happened that I got it out quickly, and repaired it myself (before this recall came out). However, what I don't agree with is the fact that a recall is supposed to fix a problem so it doesn't happen again. Changing the valve cover gasket only does so on a temporary basis.
For the power steering thing, I agree with Bill Hahn. It's a new technology, so it's something that's expected. This kind of thing has happened through history with just about everything on a car i'm sure.

Thanks! And, not becaause I think you made a mistake, but...in the case of an oil leak severe enough to fuel a fire, the driver of said car would almost have to had been aware of the leak prior to its severity becoming sufficient for fire. In other words, the telltale signs would be there...oil drips under the car, the odor of oil burning off, the smoke from burning off.
So, again, not to flip you sh!t, but there is that threshold of responsibility for any car owner to maintain their vehicle and act accordingly should signs of problems emerge. I can almost assure that in the cases of GTP fire, every car owner had some advance warning that they did not heed. Sure, they can say they didn't realize it was constituting a fire hazard, but as the old saying goes: Ignorance is no excuse.

what makes you think i hate GM ? i do hate alot of things they are doing , and alot od the stupid crap they are pulling , but ive owned 1 chrysler(64 ply sport fury) , and 2 fords(56 bird and 29 model a vette powered hot rod which i still own)
the electric power steering was always a bad idea , and i never really noticed it in all the cobalts ive driven

This makes me chuckle. You made a huge deal about the window switch on a fit. Yet its no big deal that cobalts are having problems with P/S. LOL Please do call nut swinger considering I don't own a fit and here shortly wont own a Honda at all. Man, the ignorance from you is just astonishing. Well....I'm sure its always been there I just never noticed it.
^^^it's a plenty big deal. if gm wants people to ditch their toyotas and buy a new gm they better be able to offer them a better car. why trade a car known and proven to be reliable and well built for another car very well known for not being reliable and and well built that also has a recall. gm needs to fix it's own problems before trying to sh!t on other car makers

You're right. How could I even THINK of downplaying a rare stiff steering defect when I am making fun of Jap-cars that self-ignite? Not to mention the Jap-crap that either can't stop accelerating, or their flagship greenie cars that just
won't stop due to faulty brakes.
Yes sir, stiff steering that none of the hundreds of Cobalt customers I have, nor any of the thousands I see online, have ever experienced...why, that defect is WAY worse than Jap-cars that run into other cars / drive into ponds / light themselves on fire...all the ways they've KILLED and MAIMED people, and destroyed their own reputation.
Gawd, how "ignorant" of me to take such "huge" pleasure in seeing the mighty Asian wonders finally be taken down a few notches. And on an American car-fan site no less...why, you are 100% correct, I need to go to a Jap-car site if I wish to enjoy my affinity for American cars!
You and your Jap-car-fanboy friend have certainly showed me the error of my ways. It's truly "astonishing". I am humiliated. You should "chuckle" some more, this is truly funny!

If it is anything like what the G6s do, its not that hard to steer. Personally I hate electronic PS and TAC systems. I am not concerned about my mom driving her SS. I assume its also a similar system to what my dads Vue has as well.
