2010 Malibu - Tires and brake questions

The GF is looking for a new vehicle. We had been eying up a nice 2007 Jeep Liberty Limited, but wanted to price out something new as well. The idea of a full warranty and no worries for a long time is a nice though.

Anyway, we price a 2010 Malibu 1LT with the 2.4, and 6 speed auto trans. Nice car all around, but have not been for a test drive yet.

My question is, will my winter tires and rims from my 97 Grand Prix work? The Malibu's stock tires are 215/50/R17, and the winters I have are 205/70/R15.

On a tire calculator, they match up outside diameter perfectly, so there would be no speedo issues. However, will the bolt pattern line up? Also, will the smaller 15" rims clear the brakes on the Malibu?

Thanks for the help guys, it will defiantly aid in our decision.

I think GM uses the 5 x 110mm pattern on their new five lug wheels, so the grand prix, which i think is 5 x 114mm will not fit.

I think they are nice cars also, and wouldn't let this stop you. Couldn't you just have them mounted and balance on the factory malibu wheels as you need them and take them off in the spring?

Ya, maybe. But by the time you do that 4 season (at $50 a pop for a rim change over) it would be better to just by rims, mount and balance them once, then take them on and off each season myself. That is what I have always done in the past.

Oh well, no biggy. Would have saved a little $$ if it worked.

I still think the Jeep may be the front runner anyhow.

Also, going to look at a couple Grand Cherokees tonight.

Thanks again.

As already stated, all the new FWD GM cars are 5x110. They dumped the 5x100 and 5x115 in favor of a single pattern (why they didn't just pick an existing one is beyond any reasonable comprehension, but that's another story). Also, IIRC, they have 12" front brakes, so I highly doubt your 15" rims would fit on there even if they were the correct pattern.

I would seriously do some hard negotiating with them when you go to buy it and see if you can get a set of winter rims out of the deal. They are writing some serious deals right now if you have the stamina to keep negotiating hard. I know someone who purchased two vehicles (GM) just a couple of months ago and negotiated to the point that they saved themselves $200/month without changing their financing terms. IIRC, this was on a 5 year loan, which equals $12K they negotiated off. I'm sure if you're reasonably good, you can get a set of winter rims thrown into a deal.
