So I finally paid off my sunfire, and it's now 6 years old. It's had it's maintenance etc, but I'm sure things are going to start needing replacement soon. But I'm looking into something of a little higher quality and atm have it down to a Tiburon GT, Celica GTS, RSX Type S. Took a 2010 turbo'd cobalt out for a test drive but it was way out of my price range lol. Looking for no more than 14k after taxes (Canadian).
The Celica I'm leaning away from though, I took one for a drive, and while it was nice and I was infatuated with it at the time, the dealership wanted to much for it, and after looking at it a few more times I'm kind of not liking their looks anymore.
Today after work I'm taking a 2003 rsx type s for a drive to see how that feels. Looks better than the celica imo so if I can talk the price down to where it's managable that might be an option.
I have yet to find a tiburon gt in my area to try out, but on autotrader.ca they seem to have a few that are in the range I'm looking for.
On the price note... I was told at the Toyota dealership that you can't talk their asking price of a car down if you're trading in your current vehicle... is that true? I always thought a person was able to go in and say basically I think that's to high, if you could lower that price than I'd be willing to do the trade in and purchase etc.
Anyway, any opinions on these three cars, or are there any others that I may have overlooked?
Thanks
Quick question, why would you take the test drive if it was out of your price range? That is just a waste of a salespersons time. We dont get paid just to take test drives. As far as the dealer goes that said he wouldnt discuss price until the trade was determined, alot of dealers are like that unfortunately and give dealers a bad name. Here is the reason they do it...You driving your car expect alot of money for your trade. So what the dealer will do is take the ACV (actual cash value) of your trade and use the profit in the vehicle to show you more that what its worth. We do this because some people's hot button is their trade. But when it comes down to it A-B=C.
What kind of a Toyota are you looking at, maybe I could help you. Shoot me a p.m. and I'll see what I can do for you. And the best determination for what your trade is worth is approximtaely kbb.com trade in in fair condition....but will probably be a little less than that.
Let me know.
Not unintentionally accelerating since 2009!!!!
So you want to get rid of your 6 year old car so you went and test drove a ....6 year old Acura? Granted, they're well built, but it's still just as old as the car you're trying to get rid of.
IMO - Look at a Mazda 3 or a Scion TC...you can get a new or nearly new one staying reasonably close to your price range.

08 Civic Si. I'm finding the sedans Si's around where i'm at for 14k with only 1100 miles on them. You can find them cheaper with a few more miles.
First, keep in mind that it's 14k Canadian, I'm in BC.
As far as taking the cobalt for a test drive, for starters I wasn't aware it would be so far out of the range I was looking for, and right from the start I told the salesman that I wasn't looking to buy right away I just wanted a feel for what was out there (thinking the Cobalt would've been affordable for me). I didn't want to waste his time so I let him know this up front.
For my trade in they actually offered me about what I was expecting, but when I mentioned that I'd looked around and saw a lot of similar cars for a lesser price they said that they couldn't both take a trade in, and negotiate on the price.
I
was looking at an '05 Celica GTS but I've since kinda fallen out of interest with them.
Yes, that is correct I want to get out of my 6 year old sunfire and wouldn't mind a "new" 6 year old car as long as the quality is there. I have a feeling an Acura would be better built than my Pontiac
I was looking at the Mazda 3's but are they all four door? In all honesty I don't want a four door... if I had to cave I might, but would prefer not to. Scion TC I wasn't aware you could get in Canada? Totally wrong?
Not a fan of the looks of Civic's these days
Drove through the lot though checking some of them out.

You know how many times iv told a sales person I wasnt in no way buying a car today and they'd still spend an hour trying to make the sale and still take me for a test drive. We hardly waste there time...
I gotta agree I'm not sure why your going from one old car to another. But You can def find a RSX in that price range...Id Look at something a little newer....base model cobalt?

Definitely a nice looking car. None anywhere near me though, plus I'd heard that BMWs are super expensive when they do break, that true?
As for going from one old car to another, I don't really have a lot of interest in any new cars that are being produced, not to mention any that are in the price range I'm looking for. So because of that I have to look for something I do like, in the price range. Which just happens to be in those years unfortunately. Thought about a Cobalt for a while, but seems to be a step sideways in quality seeing as how both the cobalt and the sunfire are the bottom line vehicles... As for the three that I'd named, not sure where they stand but I assume at least the build quality is above what I have currently.
Anyway, the RSX Type S I was going to go take for a drive yesterday was actually being held as sold since the weekend and completely sold yesterday morning, so couldn't even see how that feels to drive.
I appreciate the replies though, I'm just trying to figure something out.
Consider this. What was your monthly payment on the sunfire? You could just drive your fire through the winter+ pretend you were making a car payment.... To your savings account. The fire wouldn't depreciate much in the next 6-7 months, and you'd have a much bigger down payment as well. I understand wanting a new car the instant the old one is paid off... That's why leasing is popular with folks. I'm just suggesting a bit of fiscal prudence. You'd eith have a bigger down payment OR 6 months payments set aside in case of job loss etc. But if you must have it now, I like the scion tc, or a civic si

Get the Celica. 6 Speed, VVTL-i engine, four wheel discs, reliable, still great on gas. Also retains value very well. Optionally, you could go for the Corolla XRS (9th gen). Looks ike a Corolla, goes like a Celica.

You know, to be honest this thought never crossed my mind and I don't know why. It's a good idea really, had I been able to do this when I first checked out the Celica it probably would have brought it down to my range. I think this will probably be the way I end up going since it'll allow me to pay off my credit card as well in the meantime. Unless an amazing deal pops up somewhere that I can't pass up
Never knew that about a Corolla XRS, that's kind of neat. Still not interested in a four door, but good to know.
Thanks again to all.
