I've been looking around on craigslist for a toy car, something cheap preferably lightweight I can screw around with and learn some stuff on(welding, body repair and paint, interior, etc). I've found several cars but a lot of the more interesting ones don't have titles. What the hell does that mean? To me that means it was stolen, if you simply lost the title you could apply for just that and get a new one couldn't you?
If you get a car without a title is there anything you can do to get one? I've emailed some of these guys and they say they can get me bills of sale, but really, what's that worth/going to help?
best bet is to get the vin number and run it through the DMV
I just got myself an EF Civic to boot around in, has a nice little b16a2 swapped in, GREAT car to learn to do body work on since EF's rust to all hell, VERY light weight, and SUPER fun to boot around in.
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
The last person to title it is the person who would have to request a replacement title, and that could have been a few owners before the one that has it now. If you just plan to practice welding and such on it and don't plan to drive it, you shouldn't have to worry. I would get the Bill of Sales though, just incase.

SO EVERYTHING!
in michigan, as long as there is not a lien on the car and it doesn't come back stolen they will get you a new one, I had to get a title twice. the guy I bought my 91 rs from kept trying to get more money out of me for the car before he would give me the title. I just went down to sec. of state and told them that i got the car from a guy i worked with and he got fired, so I couldn't find him. they checked it, and printed me a temp. on the spot.
bill of sale should be all you need. im sure it varies state to state but ive been tearin up craigslist for cars (6 in the last 6months) arizona is really easy to get a title just a notarized bill of sale and 40 bucks. best bet is to call the dmv and see what they need

How much did you spend if you don't mind me asking? I'm looking at spending around a grand, mostly because I'm not expecting anything amazing..just something to work on that's running, hell not running's cool, just no rust..Not sure if I'm willing to take on something that big.
I think I'm looking for cars in the mid 80's. So far found a golf for 500 and a crown vic with a 5.0 for 700. Crown vic is too heavy and the golf didn't have a title. There are a ton of muscle-type cars up that would need a LOT of work, but again..no god damn titles. I'm calling the DMV tomorrow see what they tell me, hopefully Tx is as cool as Az.
Just got off the phone with the tax office. They said to be able to register the vehicle I will have to have the title. Doesn't matter if it's a 1950's car, the title will have to be had. They said the original owner will have to apply for it as well. So that tosses out a lot of vehicles that were selling for cheap..probably selling cheap because they know they will only be sellable for parts.
What's sad is the guy said you can get a title from an office 30 minutes away..so these owners(if they are the actual owners) need only drive about an hour total and they could legally sell the car. Ah well, the search continues.
