1997 Suburban starter click
Monday, March 16, 2009 8:45 PM
I have had a 1997 Suburban 4X4 for 4 months now with no issues until 2 days ago. I tried to start it and all that happened was a single click from the starter. It was not the same sound as the clicking from a dead battery and the lights did not dim at all. I was going to replace the starter but a friend looked at it and told me it was not lining up with the flex plate. He turned the harmonic balancer and it started up fine and worked normal for a day. I asked him if it would happen again, does it need to be adjusted or something and he said that Chevys do that and it will work fine. Well, I tried to start it tonight and it has the same problem again. Does anybody have any ideas on what I need to do to fix it? Thanks...

might need to replace the starter. my gf's old kia had a dead spot in the starter. sometimes it would start, other times you'd just get a click and then nothing.

even took it to the autoparts store and had it tested at one point and they said it was fine but the only thing that fixed it for us was replacing the starter.

might also check your leads to the starter to make sure everything is tight.

If that were true, then turning the harmonic balancer would not allow it to work again

are you sure the starter is disengaging?

Short of the story here.If a starter has a dead spot the armature gets stuck and will either not engage or disengage to turn the flywheel. Now turning the engine by hand only moves the armature to the a spot that will conduct eletrical flow.Your theory of moving the harmonic balancer is NOT the case.Starters are fickle and u can get them tested and the start time and time again and never hit the the spot where no electrical current is and just either click or do nothing.I would replace the starter and clean ur cable ends or end to ensure a solid connection once u change it out.If you replace it (recommend) and the problem persist I would clean ur ground wires and battery cables and check for contiunity if it comes to that.I say the starter is toast and I can tell u starters these days do not last I just repl mine on my trk and it was only 5yrs old and started to just click and or hesitate or not engage. This trk is 22 yrs old and this is my 4 starter over the life of my mazda.OK

My old chev truck used to do that.. I had to get under the truck and tap the starter a few times with a hammer, seemed to do the trick lol. Give that a try and see what happens.
