Is it an old F body? Fox body mustang? How about 240z with a v8 swap? Turbo'd honda or S/C'd grand prix....What's your favorite "cheap" fast car?
Personally...I don't think there's much better than an old mustang with a nice lopey cam, a sleek cowl hood, I really liked the 90-93 cobra/cobra clones. It all looks good to me.
I know a lot of you guys are F body guys, so get specific with what you enjoy/hope to someday own...the theme has to be cheap though.
Toss in a high dollar one, might as well: I'm not too fancy, I'd like an STI that ran low 11's.
price limit? "cheap" could be 100K for someone who has millions. then ill throw in my opinion. lol

-Early 90s Nissan 240 with an SR20DET.. (S14 and up are heavier cars)
-1990s Cavalier 3400 V6 5spd with a supercharger bolted to the upper intake (hole in hood needed) haha.. orrrr turbo..
-CRX with a B20/LS-Vtech turbo.. or any EF chassis with a K-motor

-Mitsubishi Evo I, II, III.. etc.
-Nissan Pulsar GTi-R
-Fiero with a motor swap..?
A tercell with a starlet swap. I've got 3grand in mine and it beats most stuff on the street =P
chevette with a 454 swap.tubbed rear and no interior.loads of fun lol
Not really a "sports" car... but I had a project that I always wanted to do...
My first car was a Dodge Shadow sedan. I always thought it'd be cool to get a later model Shadow coupe, make it RWD with a V6. Just for !@#$ and giggles.
But other than that, I think it'd be fun to do a late 80s Monte Carlo SS.

grand prix gtp
not a sports car by any means, but its definitely quick, on the cheap side, and a friggen blast to drive!
Check out my build thread!
I gotta go with Hellion. The Fox Body Mustang imo is Ford's equivalent of the 55-57 Chevy and 67-69 Camaro. It's a simple clean design that has a foot in three decades, the seventies, eighties and nineties. Yeah, it's not as pretty as some cars, but you can do anything with one. Everything from a 2.3 Turbo to a 460 Big Block fits in one. You can have a Coupe, Hatch, T-top, Convertible and even a Sedan and Station Wagon if you put a Stang nose on an LTD. You can have a disco 1979 vinyl extravaganze decor or a super modern 1999 SN95 Mustang interior in the thing. You can build one for comfort with Lincoln MKVII parts or build one for the drags. You can set it up with a live axle or IRS. You can put in everything from a powerglide to a Tremec 6 speed.
It's not about what it is, but what you can do with it.
Between you all? I think this is the passing of the torch between GM and Ford for the crown of best Hot-Rod platform. Before, if you wanted a cheap car to build with lots of reliable parts GM was your best bet, now though? I gotta go with Ford. The F-Body is arguably prettier but you don't have the endless possibilities of the Fox.
My own idea of a perfect cheap sports car? A 1977 Alfa-Romeo GTV6. Dirt cheap, pretty to look at, and drives extremely well. It's a bargain Ferrari. Then, if you want a genuine big-block musclecar that kicks serious ass but that nobody in America knows about, get a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9. You can get one for under 10 grand in prime shape and it is one fast mother. The story goes that it can beat a 1968 GTO in a streetrace, yet is never anything less than a fine luxury car the rest of the time. Finally, if you want a rare exotic that costs almost nothing, buy an Alfa-Romeo Montreal. If the GTV is a baby Ferrari, this is a teenage Ferrari. Not quite a grownup but capable of kicking Daddy's ass every now and then.
I also have a fondness for the Merkur XR4Ti. It too handles very well and you can use mostly off the shelf Mustang parts on it.
I would go with a LS2 Corvair haha... small car + mid engine V8 = a lot of fun
2002 Firebird WS6. Dunno being able to get my hands on an LS1 with only 20,000 miles and nearly half the sticker price of the car in '02 is pretty cheap for me.

If you have millions then by all means post your 100K dollar cheap car. The "your ideal cheap sports car" shoulda told you to go off your budget
I'd say minimum 10K, max..I dunno, depends on your budget.

im with you ryan... always been a fan of the AE86... and my buddy has a fiero with a 3.8 s/c swap... so im kinda impartial to that... lol
my choice would have to be a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula Coupe... 5.0L 5 speed... no t-top or anything... and it would have to be either red, black, or yellow...
now if money wasnt an issue... a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C... either blue with white stripes or silver with black stripes...
2003 Cobra !!!!

Gotta agree with the Stang fans,my buddy had an older FOX Body with 2 extra parts cars and an extra 351W sitting in the garage.
I like the mid 80's Z28 Camaro's like I used to own but with the 350.I also love the 1st gen DSM's,Talons and Eclipses,Lasers. You can find modded ones for under 5k that are sitting at 300hp plus.
