So i NEED another car, my old jeep is just getting tired and needs a few repairs before it just drops dead.
I've been looking at the GTO's a lot lately. It's a great deal for the money. I'm not picky about 5.7 or 6.0. I'm not a street racer, or ever plan to visit a drag track. The 350 or so hp the 5.7 will be plenty for my daily driving needs. I'd love the 6.0 but they are just still to pricey. So after a few years of this car being out now do we have any better info on reliability or lack of?
I'm curious what are the pros and cons of owning the new GTO. They look like they are well put together. Do they rattle like other used GM products? Any stupid engineering quirks that are a bear to work on and/or break regularly? (i.e. like the Z24's LD9 internal fuel or water pump...whichever one it is, or the CTS's rear axles snapping.)
Anything i should look for the ones i'm looking for?

I haven't heard of to many engineering blunders or maintenance nightmares on them. Seen quite a few blown up from abuse.....
I like the GTO but I decided on a 2005 EVO instead. I have nasty winters here so the AWD was the deciding factor between the two.

Yeah, ditto here.
So breifly i was looking at a 2008 Cobalt SST
But i do plan to keep the jeep, so that put the GTO back on the menu

I have no intention of ever owning a GTO. Mi. roads do a lot of damage to them. I am also less than impressed with the overall quality of the cars.
they are nice cars but ya they would suck in the winter i would imagine
he has a jeep though. he said he was keeping it. I would assume its 4wd. I know not all jeeps are as I have one myself. I would also assume he would be using the jeep for winter or bad weather

Yepp, very easy to work on and a GREAT car
The 04s though do have suspension issues with strut rub
Stick with the 05-06
Better engine, suspension, brakes, and it looks better IMO

Yeah, MI roads are really bad.
I wouldn't waste the money around here..too many abused ones...
And they don't seem to hold up well to every day driving.....if you don't mind replacing lots of stuff....
they are very nice, they handel well...i been in a 04 a whole bunch of times...i would get a 05-06 but i hate that damn hood....just my 2 cents
Michigan roads don't bother me, and looking to but one from out west and drive it back anyhow. And yeah i'm keeping the jeep for winters.

the bushings and front strut mounts took a serious beating on the trip from down unda
04's have weird cluster issues , and park brake lever problem(easy fix) which is slowly effecting the 05-06's
other wise they are good cars
go for it I think they are great cars!

look up " GTO strut rub" that was the biggest thing that i've read about.
i love the look/performance of them, but there is a few issues to look into.
I <3 my 06. as far as quality, interior wise it's awesome. if you plan on keeping stock, the overall mechanical quality is great (except the noted strut rub issue).

Pics of said vehicle. I would love to get my hands on an Evo 8 or 9. For now I have the poor man's Evo (1G DSM AWD)

I have been lurking on ls1gto.com for a long time always tossing the idea back and fourth on buying one.
Here is what I have learned.
1. Strut rub issue
2. Tire melting power and your limited to the width of wheels . 8.5" wide in the back I believe ...
3. The 04 is nice but not as nice as what you get in 05 and 06 . and 05 / 06 give you the better ls2 6.0 400hp motor. Better suspension , Braking, and Scooped Hood.
4. 05 and 06 are the same except for the tailights being blacked out in 06.
5. Search the for sale adds on the site listed above. If you can purchace private party and get a vehicle loan through your bank. You are going to save a boat load.
6. An 04 at a dealer cost as much as an 05 or 06 on ls1gto.com for private party. That website kicks asses.

Good luck and let us know if you decide.
P. S. I think SpeedracerZ has a GTO maybe he can chime in...
