I have two vehicles I've been trying to sell since July. One is a Dodge Dakota, blue book of 7,800. The other is a Miata, 3,600. I have tons of people call but have only had one person look at it.
The area I live in is truck heavy, lots of ranches and stuff..so people have to own trucks.
I've done craigslist nonstop since July. I've listed it in papers for like a 45mile radius. Dunno what else I can do.
I don't need two cars. I want to sell the truck that I don't like, and the car that's just not practical and pick up one vehicle in decent shape.
I'm considering trading them in. But I had a question. The car was a gift from my dad..he sorta owed me some money and he wanted an excuse to buy a different car. The car is still in his name. Can I still trade it in(he'd of course sign and do all that stuff)? Can you trade two cars in for one? I really want to buy a car outright, I don't want to get full coverage on a vehicle..and I for sure don't want payments.
Trading used for used is a bad idea. And I really only want to spend 2,500 of my own money..aside from the trade ins..I just can't see that working out, but maybe someone on here has more knowledge of that sorta thing than I do.
Autotrader.com
Both my cavs have sold within 2 weeks of listing them on Autotrader.
for multiple car trade ins, its all what the dealer wants to do. some will some wont.
usually used car dealers will take 2 for 1 trades, but they will try and give you less for each individual car, they still want money out of the deal.
I should mention I'm asking 5K for the truck and 3K for the Miata. More for the Miata for the obvious.
My only issue with Autotrader would be my worry about someone driving several hours to see the vehicle and being upset that I didn't point something out or that they felt it didn't coincide with the listing. I'm not the best with descriptions, and unless someone straight out asks me I'm only going to tell them the normal stuff.
Honestly, I'd be OK with less money...it just depends on how much less.
i've never had a problem selling a car ever. Always listed online on local forums and craigslist. If it doesn't sell for a while at a certain price. just lower it in 500 increments till it sells. problem solved
Trading them in will probably get you a lot less money than you'd want or get if you sold them privately. But I've seen people trade in 2 cars before.
Your best bet would be to lower the prices. Times are tight for a lot of people, and they might not want to spend right now. They seem to be priced fair now, but if people don't have the money, they aren't going to buy.
2004 Cavalier. Razzi. (Sold)
1998 Corvette. Some mods.
1992 Typhoon. Lots of mods.
1994 Civic VX 44MPG
Thanks for the advice guys. I just feel if I sell it for less than 4K, I might as well just keep the damn truck..and the Miata is a perfect go-to car and it's in SWEET shape(just high mileage). I honestly feel it's worth a lot more.
I started the truck at 8K(figure I'd make someone feel great by letting them talk me down several grand) and the Miata at closer to 5K. I've dropped them down to more realistic figures and am willing to negotiate, I just won't accept payments(had a lot of offers for that).
Rob, I think you're probably right : /
To answer the question that hasn't been answered yet - you CAN trade in a car that's in someone else's name as long as they sign the paperwork. My mom & I bought a spare car together, but she let me trade it in on a car since we no longer needed it. The dealership did all the paperwork & I just had to bring her by to sign one paper when I picked the car up.
My mom has also traded in 2 cars to buy 1, which someone else said is a case-by-case situation.
Have you tried posting flyers around? Do you have Agway or Tractor Supply, or somewhere that people that need trucks would shop?

That is an excellent idea, I hadn't even thought about it. I put another add in a classifieds only paper for this week. After that I'll try fliers then I'll look into trading stuff in. I've already wasted about 200$ in posting stuff in the newspapers. It'd be different if I was getting tons of calls, only had about 10 total since July..and only 1 or 2 of ten have come to see it.
Thank you for answering the questions too,
I think I'll wait on this add to see what it does before I try to trade them in.
whats wrong with someone wanting to make payments, just tell them that you're keeping the keys until its paid for. i had a guy write up a document/contract and get it notarized. he paid me 500/month until 2k was paid off for my celica.
GO PATS!!!

They all want the vehicle while making payments. I'm not a dealership. I've gotten probably 5 people that were interested in making payments. Most suggested I give them the truck while they make payments, and I just hold onto the title.... It was out of the question. Especially since I live about 10 minutes from the Mexico border.

Yeah really, if they can make payments, then they can get a loan and make payments on the loan. Good luck with your sell!
lower the price
if theyve been sitting for 6 months, then yeah, its probably the price

I sold the Miata yesterday morning for 2850. Now I have a lot more options
I ended up putting the vehicles in a classifieds only newspaper circulation. I got one call on it, they test drove it and loved it. I had listed it for 3,500..but had already decided I'd go down to 3K without much negotiation.
For the truck should I try to see what I can get on a trade in? Or should I keep trying to sell it? I still need to try fliers and what not.
Congrats on the sale
Id keep trying to sell it privately because even if you take a big hit it'll probably be better then what the dealer will give you
