New Camaro Question SS Z28
Wednesday, July 09, 2008 5:16 PM
After reading some things online as well as the July Road and track. It seems that the model line up has the Z28 over the SS.

From the article:
Slated to bow in the first quarter of 2009 as an early 2010 model, it's expected that the Camaro will be offered in three trim levels — LS, LT and SS. The base LS may be powered by Chevy's 3.5-liter pushrod V-6 making about 220 bhp. The LT models would use the overhead-cam direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6 developing upward of 300 bhp, while the SS will be powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 (similar to that found in the Corvette) tuned to produce around 400–405 bhp. A year after launch, Chevy will introduce a convertible version and after that a high-performance Z28 model with a super-charged 6.2-liter sibling to the Corvette ZR1's LS9 motor known as the LSA. That engine would make somewhere in the neighborhood of 480–500 bhp and is similar to the engine used in the upcoming Cadillac CTS-V.

In light of increasing gas prices, a crash program has been initiated to study the feasibility of offering the 260-bhp turbocharged 2.0-liter four (used in the HHR SS and Cobalt SS) as a possible base engine to replace the 3.5-liter V-6. However, that engine may not be offered until the 2011–2012 model year.

I know the above is speculation still, but I was always under the impression the SS was the top beast then the Z28. Maybe because the ss has been badged on everything? And only the camaro holds the Z28 name? Anyone have opinions?

considering you even mentioned that everything is speculation, why ask the question. Its silly for a magazine to post any of that info you just did. GM has posted nothing on engines, trim levels, or pricing. If I ever read something like this in magazine (C&D, road&track, etc) I completely ignore it, at best take it with a grain of salt. They usually just make stuff up to sell copies of the mag. If you're actually curious about the camaro and want to avoid the bull@!#$ magazines feed you, check out camaro5.com

the Z28 was the weekend racer boy car , and the SS was the refined beast , being offered with everything from the 300hp 350 to the 375 hp 396 , and dealer optioned 425hp 427's

4cyl camaro's just like the diesel camaros (yes they made both) never went over well

I'd buy an LNF camaro if it weighed in under 3000 lbs and had a six speed manual. If its too heavy its a waste of itme. Yes it bastardizes the Camaro's heritage, but I bet i'd sell like a six cylinder mustang - which is a LOT. Screw the 60 degree OHV V6's. They're dated technology and almost never have aftermarket support.

I would love them to make a blower for the 3.6 motor...

but thats only so I can snag one and put it on my CTS

I have to say that for a base motor option the turbo 4 sounds a lot more appealing than the 3.5

I agree with the mid level motor being the 3.6 and obviously having an ls motor is needed...
