My civic is a little past 335,000 miles and is going through oil pretty bad now (blow-by) and the gas mileage is going south.
I'm not looking for something to mod, but reliable transportation that gets 25 mpg. It needs to be a four-door.
Other than my Honda and my sunfire, I have little experience with buying a car. Any ideas would be helpful.

Ford Contour if you need four doors. Go with 4 cylinder. They last forever. I have 99,XXX miles on it and still runs strong.

Just go to a used car lot, god will guide you to the car that suites your needs
I appreciate the subtlety there darkstar.
I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Ford detour or a Mercury mistake. I might just look for another civic 4door. Wish gas was down, cuz I'd pick up a late 80's Grand Marquis. Love those big ol' slow cars. Comfy.

well you're on a jbody website, asking about a 4 door.. i say buy a j!
I'm back from the dead.
Currently Driving: RSX Type-S.
My Cavalier Burnt up :-(
i say a j-body too... im sure you could had your self a decent late 90's Z24 for that price
heck, for 500 - 1000 dollars more you could get an 03 + 4 door cavalier with the ecotec in it.
I went to autotrader.com just now. The best I could find for the money was something in the range of an '01 with about 120,000 miles on it for about 3800.oo. Man I hate high gas prices, even makes the price of a used econo box go through the roof.

dude, I'll sell you my 01 coupe with 38,000 miles on it for $4000. seriously, take it.
I just picked up a 93 Buick LeSabre for 1800 bucks... sumbitch only had 90K and still runs like a champ. Personally, I'd recommend anything GM + FWD with a 3.1/3100/3400/3800 in it. Reason I say this is they get good mileage, and there's not a damn thing on them (engine and trans included) that you can't snag out of a junkyard for under $600. Believe it or not, on the highway, the LeSabre is about on par with my Beetle for fuel mileage (gotta love ridiculously low torque peak coupled with ridiculously low gearing). Whatever car you wind up looking at, go over to car-part.com and look up the engine and trans to see how much you can get them for and how available they are in your area. This way you're covered if something goes wrong, you know that whatever you buy has cheap parts available.

Agreed! There was just such a long run of cars that had the powerplants mentioned above; it's easy to find parts anywhere. And if you want cheap four doors w/ about 25mpg, they fit the bill perfectly.
Alternately, another civic would fit the bill, but what about a late 90's corolla or even camary? Used sentra? Your options are pretty wide open since youre looking for ~25mpg. Hell if you didnt want a four door, Id recommend a 93-97 LT1 Fbody.

Good advise.
The only cars I would not get from GM with these engines would be the w-body. At least the 1rst and 1.5 gens. The rear brakes are a pain in my ass. The rest of the car is great. Minus the head gasket jobs that can be expensive.
Buick Regal 4tw. (or a Buick Century).

LOL I've rocked a 1993 for my DD for a couple years now (handed down to the GF).
189,000 miles she's made it. Third and fourth are failing in the tranny, could be something minor, but I only drive it around town in second anyhow. Lots of other little @!#$ wrong with it, but hell it's lived a long life and the body on it is still mint.
Suprisingly highway mileage on the car was awesome before tranny started skipping. The 4.6l also has some good pep, I always thought it might be worthwhile to scoop up a Crown Vic police interceptor for a DD considering the life you can get out of them when properly maintainted, especially if you prefer full framed big body vehicles.
Personally, I hate this damn car.
My little 94 Sentra 4door has 195,000 miles and is running strong and great, i get an average of 27 miles between my daily city and highway mix of driving. I love this car, and if i need spare parts ever, the junk yards are full of them.

Maybe I'll find a dealership and go in with 2grand as a down payment and finance the rest. Get 5k car instead. Better hurry though, because once summer hits, I'll likely be looking at well-above retail blue book for anything getting good mileage. I saw a 202 4dr cav with a rear deck lid spoiler and it looked pretty good. I'd prefer a manual, but a 4 door J with a stick is pretty rare.

gen 2 cav wagon. My old one is still on the road and nearing 400,000 KMs. Or an old corolla 4-door. I don't care if people say they're reliable, Civics are for girls.
2010 Honda Fit LX
I bought a 1997 Cutlass Supreme 4dr with the 3.1l engine. Bought it for 1700$ with pretty low mileage. This thing rocks!! Confortable and the gas mileage is great! I never expected that from this car. The negine runs and starts like new.
The Cutlass was only supposed to be a car to go to work but now it's my daily driver. I bought an engine+transmission with 74 000 miles for only 375$...lol Just in case.
Found a 99 Lesabre with 85,000 miles for 3900 today. Stupid tan color, but no-cracked leather and one-owner.

i jus picked up a 96 vw jetta with 8ok miles for 3 grand. gas mileage is great, its roomy, and it has no balls. i love everything about it except that the 2.0 gives you no acceleration.
