It seems that General Motors starts learning from Ford; most exactly from Mustang’s success: V6 models are the key to strong sales.
Troy Clarke, president of GM North America, said that the Mustang, launched in 1964, succeeded because it stayed true to its roots as "a very affordable car to a very broad base of people." A High-performance V-8 models, such as the Mustang Cobra and Shelby Mustang, create buzz and draw buyers to showrooms, he said. The Camaro coupe goes on sale in February 2009. The convertible follows about nine months later.Clarke expects most Camaros will be equipped with a V-6 engine. A Chevy source said the car will be offered with a 3.6-liter V-6, producing about 281 hp.
"We know that the mission with the Camaro isn’t to create a specialty vehicle with a very narrow appeal that is very much subject to your wallet," Clarke said at the auto show. "It is going to be a great base car that is going to have a very broad appeal.
"The concept of the car will evolve into a really fun-to-drive, stylish vehicle, as opposed to something that just breathes fire and has more cubic inches than the next guy."

Actually that is one upping ford using the 3.6 instead of a truck based engine like ford.

Hell, I would buy a V6 Camaro if they actually do use the CTS engine in it, and not that 3x00 crap (unless it's supercharged

)
^^^
It wont be the cts engine but it should be a dohc if im not mistaken.

teh CTS motor would have been really cool
but hey, 280 horse out of the V6 thats slated for it.....not to shabby
My dads on the "dealer list" around here, regardless of when it comes out, were getting the 8cyl. Technically there isnt a REAL list, but we grew up with the owner of the dealership adn are real good friends, so were #2 on his list, the owner is #1 haha.
wait, maybe I'm out of my mind, but isn't the 3.6 DOHC, in fact, the CTS engine? I know it probably will be a derivative of the engine, but it will be more or less the same, correct? Basically what I meant was I hope they don't put a big lump of crap in the V6 version, just because it would be cheaper.
The CTS engine is direct injection if I am correct, and this would be the non-direct injection version. I don't think it will be a lump of crap engine though.
there is also a non-DI engine in the CTS, which is what I'm assuming this engine will be. Also in the new Malibu, LaCrosse, etc. I just hope they don't throw one of the 60-degree 6's (3500 or 3900) in it, or even worse, a 3800 200-hp iron turd. Not that they're bad motors, but why stick a commuter car engine into a performance car?
Unfortunately the mustang will continue to underperform and outsell, due to a lower price tag and appeal to a broader audience of buyers who are not especially automotively informed.
If it takes regular fuel, its good .
... as opposed to premium baby seal the SS will be ingesting ...
First, 2nd gen CTS has both Port and Direct 3.6L DOHC 60 degree V6 "High feature." The engine for the Camaro would be coming from the
Traverse. And yes Jinxed, the V6 runs on regular. GM engineers are trying to run the SS on Golden Retriver puppies.

Yes, I assumed he meant the DI engine. Most people know dohc are smooth.

Hopefully the V6 model does NOT have the wasteful 22" wheels that were on the convertable at the Philly auto show. Those things must weigh over 30lbs/wheel - how any engineer can say that is performance oriented is beyond me. Give me 16-17" wheels with a nice set of meaty D/Rs!!
Off topic, I even wish my solstice had smaller diameter wheels available

V6 Camaro /= performance car

2006 tC - Dust Covered, but driven more
if they put a 280hp V6 in there base and price is in the low 20k's then i think they could be onto something

those were just for show....the production car will not have those giant weels on it.
Why not put the 300hp caddy v6 into it? GM could blow the Mustang out of the water with that base motor in the Camaro, It isn't like the Camaro would be competing with the CTS.

I hope not - but keep in mind that most news of the upcoming camaro has toted 20"+ wheels for some time. I know a larger wheel is necessary to clear some of today's cars' high performance brake packages, but damn, its getting to the point where sports cars have larger wheels than 50cent's Escalade
Seriously though....NOT PERFORMANCE ORIENTED
From the sounds of it, it's going to be a variant of the LY7 motor...likely something similart to the G6 GXP, but likely with more room at the top to take an Acadia's head and intake runner to get more ponies out of it.
Believe me, even the tuned-down version i have in my GXP purrs like nobody's business and still has he oompth to throw you back into the seat.

Costs.

So is it safe to say that the v6 280 horsepower base model Camaro could give the Mustang GT with 300 ponies a run for it's money (with a good driver in the Camaro)
As much as I'm a Mustang man (and I love Camaros too) this sounds very appealing especially if the price on the v6 Camaro is set just right.
i might just be crazy for even asking this but why not put a Vortec 2.9L I-4 or Vortec 3.7L I-5 from a Colrado there wound make the car cheaper then the v-6 and have wound a dessent amount of power
I miss my Cavalier, even if it made 100 hp on a cold day and had more suspension then it deserved.

That right there scares me about this turning into a real pussified car
Even if it has 300hp, its still a V6 Camaro and the only engine that should be in that car is a V8
