HALP - effed enginzors - 98 Park Avenue 3.8 NA

Got a 98 Buick PA with a NA 3800 124,000 miles

started ticking then knocking - then running & starting rough - then stalling

Dealership says metal shavings in the oil + no compression on one cylinder

quoting $2,960.00 including tax and labor (12 hours) for the same engine installed from a Grand Prix with 80,000 miles on it.

wtf should I do

all options are on the table...

new engine, crate engine, bore + piston upgrade, used car..

I am in Flint Michigan -

where should I go?
how much should it cost?

Did I mention that I just paid $2,100 less than a month ago to have the engine overhauled, all new gaskets, new plenum, tuneup etc.

I believe they (*unnamed dealership*) mis diagnosed it the first time around do to symptoms and problems not matching up to the repairs they did... from everything it was doing a month ago it seemed like the same thing, I think letting the engine cool, and changing the oil just bought me another couple weeks.

I am WRITHING IN ANGER...

anyone want to buy a 98 Park Avenue that doesn't run for $3,000? ..................... gdit

I am getting my taxes back soon, but we were NOT planning on spending it on the car, we desperately need the money for other things so I really --- oh what do you care..

If I got a used car I would be cool spending $6,000 but man thats gonna SUCK.

what about this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-8-3800-Series-III-06-Grand-Prix-Engine-LOW-MILES-2k_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33615QQihZ004QQitemZ140122133590QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

looks good, and 180 day "parts" warranty

will a series III "drop in"

also where can I get a brand new one (other than ebay)?

is there a GM part number for the "complete" engine?

have you tried talking to the place that did the motor ?

the pics in the ebay link arent showing for me , look up morad auto on ebay , ed is a pretty good guy to deal with and does alot for the W-body crowd , let him know you were refered to him from clubgp.com

1 of the guys here just droped a series 3 s/c motor into his 98 gtp , he used the series 3 s/c and had to get a tb adaptor , the series 2 intake should swap over and re-use your stuff

e-mail him, tell him what you need, he'll do you well. ed's the nices guy out there in the used parts business. he'll bend over backwards to get you what you need, and usually for a pretty good price.

series III engine swaps are a lot more difficult than just dropping it in, look for a series II, it'll be easier for ya

Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

I will vouch for Ed as well, I have bought lots of things from him in the past and he always has great prices and things usally ship out sameday. Like it was posted above go with a series 2 engine. The cheapest way would be to get a short block from Ed (as long as the head is not damaged in that one cyclinder) and swap everything from your engine over.
