Ok, this is not dealing with my jbody but I bought a 99 Intrepid and went to do a tune up and change plugs and found there's OIL sitting within a few of my cylinders. I know that's bad but how bad is it?
Another question, since there's oil there my spark plug socket is having a hard time gripping the plug so I can pull it out any suggestions?
sell it and get a jbody ????
I bought it because of my j-body...lol...but anyone with any tips as far as getting a grip on a plug thats wet/slippery?
i cant answer the grip question. but my old s10 had leaky valve seals or rings and everytime i started it up, well, after about 5-6 hours of not running it puffed out a bit of blue smoke(burnt oil). it wasnt really a BAD thing, it was embarassing, but its not a big mechanical problem, unless it gets worse. i'd look into it.
Do you have an actual spark plug socket>?
They have a rubber grip inside of them.

Yes, it won't grip because of the oil. I thought about getting some gum and sticking it inside the socket to try and latch it on or maybe a magnet but I'm just waiting for other possible solutions before i go thru with my crazy ideas that may cause more damage lol
wow, your socket must be pretty worn out then. Or the plug still attached.
Do you have any of those metal fingers?

if the plug is unscrewed all the way, it shouldn't matter how much oil there is, a good plug socket should grip it. And a simple mechanic's magnet or a long pair of needlenose pliers will do it if nothing else will.

rubber vac hose works to. and normally you can just "borrow" it from the car you are working on.

Wait, so you bought a Dodge Intrepid to try and get
away from engine trouble?

Actually, I'm not too familiar with Dodge's I've been a GM owner since I was able to drive. So I don't know much about them. I bought the car for $1200 which is way below blue book value. Anyway, the reason for the tune up was my CEL came on and the car began to misfire. After diagnosing that it wasn't the plugs, coils or injectors I found out my cylinder #5 is pretty much dead...low compression (15-20lbs). I'm not that mechanically inclined but I'm thinking it could possibly be a burnt valve, blown piston and/or rings hence blue smoke. Instead of just dropping another USED engine into this thing and possibly end up in the same situation what would you guys recommend? I've never broken down a motor but I have help...what am I looking at as far as breaking this thing down and possibly rebuilding? I've found an engine rebuild kit with pistons, piston rings, timing chain kit, freeze plugs, oil pump, rod bearings, valve stem seals, etc, the complete kit for $400. I'd rather take a shot at it myself and save $3k or more on a shop.

You may just need to replace the headgasket, pull the heads off to find out. To rebuild the entire motor, you have to completely take it out, strip it down, and take it to a machine shop (more $$$).
I vote LS1 swap

valve cover seal is bad...

you need to read.......
And to the original poster...
if you are having trouble getting a spark plug out, and you have oil, blue smoke, and no compression on a car you spent 1200 bucks on, id cut your losses and try and sell the thing and get something else...

ExESIVE FIRE - Well, I've already spent $1200 and to drop another $400 on a complete rebuild kit including all of the components and $150 for ALL of the gaskets would mean I have a perfectly working vehicle for $1750 plus a little sweat. I don't want a car note otherwise I'd just buy something new and be done with it but this is just a cheaper alternative for me. Question....would it be easier and more efficent for me to replace the cylinder head and all gaskets if it has a burnt valve?
Pull the head first and see what's going on in there.
It will be more than 1750, some of this work you can't do by yourself(you may be able to get away with it).
This is not a one day process for you. You stated you are not mechanically inclinded, so your DD is probably not the best thing to learn on.
A friend of mine is also a mechanic who's willing to help. Really, it will be more of a learning experience for me than anything else. And i still got my sunfire that I can get around in until this is done the Intrepid was intended to be a backup if the Fire went down lol ironic I know.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions

you need to have experiance....i had a 99 intrepid with the same issues....valve cover seal is all i had to replace and while it was off i did a valve adj. and havent had an issue yet so like i said before exsesive had to be an awesome know it all as useual with telling me i need to read....i would start out with a valve cover gasket...
but on a side note: the toolbags on this site amaze me...ex-whateverfire has a nice car but hes a complete d-bag....+1-1 one possitive remark and one truthfull remark..nuff said take you sunflower and driveitupyourbiggayass...just a side note though...pay no attn to it it has nothing to do with this thred

So, your valve cover gasket was causing low cylinder compression?
fortune cookie say: better a delay than a disaster
well that would be a nice place to start...and while you have it all torn apart you could do a valve adj like i did or check the valve seals..you need to read!

word!
Just because you quoted yourself doesn't mean anything you listed could possibly cure his low compression symptom
