General Motors plans a new family of rear-wheel-drive vehicles for Pontiac. The G8 line will include a sedan followed by a wagon and sport truck. All will be modeled after products sold by GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, according to three sources familiar with the project. The vehicles will be assembled in Australia.
The G8 sedan goes on sale early next year. It replaces the Grand Prix and will be Pontiac's flagship sedan with a starting price around $25,000.
The G8 wagon will be a performance vehicle similar to the Audi A3 wagon. The G8 sport truck will be reminiscent of the Chevrolet El Camino, which was produced in North America from 1959 through 1987.
The vehicles will closely resemble the Holden VE Ute sport truck and Commodore wagon.
There was debate within GM about whether to give the sport truck to GMC. GMC won't get it.
Instead, GM's marketers wanted--and will get--a Pontiac sport truck so GM can market the three rwd vehicles as a high-performance family.
The sport truck will have the same drivetrain as the Chevrolet Camaro, and it will use a modified sedan architecture.
The 2008 Pontiac G8 sedan is the first U.S. vehicle developed on GM's global rwd sedan architecture. The Camaro will be the second. The G8 sedan will be assembled in Australia and will share much of its sheet metal with the Commodore.
The wagon and sport truck may be repriced or canceled if the U.S. dollar continues to drop. The Australian dollar is currently worth 90 cents in U.S. currency, up from 79 cents in August.

This was posted a while ago dubbed the "el camino" wasnt it?

if you could fit two car seatsin it id rock it
Leave it to GM to ruin things yet again! It should come over and be a new El Camino, Pontiac doesn't need a "sport truck" since it's more of a performance car subsidary.

Heavy sucker at over 4000lb. Doesn't look half bad.
Should be an El Camino...Pontac should not have a truck...period. Leave that to the Chevy/GMC people.

The only thing every single person from every single walk of life on earth can truly say
they have in common is that their country is run by a bunch of fargin iceholes.
I retract my previous statement (which was if they send it over here, I will buy it)... if they do not name it "El Camino," I would rather drive a Kia Rio than that thing. How @!#$ stupid can you be? Wait, nevermind - this is General Motors.
pontiac does not need a truck in the line up. i agree, if this does not go to chevy as an El Camino, it will fail.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Just something about the phrase "Pontiac truck" doesn't sit right.
1989 Z24 Convertible - Dust Covered
2006 tC - Dust Covered, but driven more
Can anyone do a chop of the Ute w/ a G8 front end? I think it wouldn't look right and hopefully it sells better than the SSR... But it would make a sweet looking lowrider.

SO EVERYTHING!
I'm not so sure that a Ute wouldn't sell well. The old El Camino died off because it had become nothing for no one, you know? For the same price or lower you could buy a gajillion cars that did what it did for a lot less. You wanted a rear wheel drive mid-sized car at a low price? The Monte-Carlo LS or Malibu was right there on the dealer floor. Wanted fast? Camaro and Firebird would do the trick nicely. Wanted a small truck? The S10/S15 could be had for several thousands of dollars less. Wanted a car that could carry as much as a truck? How about the Malibu wagon? Had 2 more doors and just as much space to carry crap. On top of that the El Camino wasn't very powerful or economical or cheap.
However today? If you want a cheap mid-sized rear wheel drive car, the Pontiac Ute will be your ONLY choice. Also people want car-like trucks and you can't get more carlike than that; and it'll probably be cheaper to buy than the Canyon/Colorado. Not to mention that it'll be fast and cool looking. Rednecks have been waiting for this thing for years.
Psssh... I wouldn't be surprised to see this outsell the G8.
got this off another forum
The official name will be Pontiac G8 ST, all will come standard with the 6.0L V8 and will be priced at $31,000. Slightly cheaper than the G8 sedan with the V8. It's likely all of the sedan's options will be standard on the ST.
