3.1L V6 thermostat location?
Saturday, September 22, 2007 7:36 AM
Hi guys,

I have bought a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme as a winter beater. The car is extremely clean, same owner for the last 10 years who bought it new, old folks 70+ years old. Only one problem...There is poor heating in the car. I guess it may be the thermostat. It has the 3.1L V6 engine, the last generation of these I think.

Where is the thermostat located and how is it hard to replace/repair..??? <--- I am not mecanicaly inclined if you know what I mean.

Thank you!

i would think that if theres no heating inside the car but the car gets to normal operting temp. then the problem is not going to be your thermostat. it may be something wrong with the heater core inside your dash. first make some simple checks xuch as: is there enough coolant in the rad. are there any leaks. if not, then proceed to checking the core. i remember one time my friend was having the same problem. the way we fixed it was by disconecting the hoses that go to the heater core by the firewall and then blew though one of them untill all the crap came out of it. after that the heat worked perfectly! try these and c how it works for u!

Right side of the enigne below the below the intake manifold you will see a little elbow coming off the block. The right side radiator hose goes to it. Two bolts and it comes out.

Check to see if the lower intake gaskets are leaking. 3.1's are known for it. If that is leaking, you could be low on coolant and that would be the cause of your no heat problem.
