What to get for around $6500? 1998+ daily driven
Thursday, March 15, 2007 4:20 PM
I'm looking for a new daily driver. My last car was recently totalled and it looks like im in the market for something else.

I'm after something 1998 and newer, with under 100,000miles.

It cannot be a GM, or Chrysler product.... and i would infact prefer an import, but not a honda (thats what i'm replacing)
I'm not into doing any engine swaps or anything like that either. And i dont care how fast it is. I also want it to be good on gas!

Whatever i buy must be stock and will be left stock (except for tint and some wheels..K&N drop in)

Here's what i have in mind: and keep in mind im not trying to impress anyone with what i buy

-Hyundai Tiburon 98-01
-Hyundai Elantra 00+
-Kia spectra GSX 01+
-Ford Focus 00+
-Mazda MX6 (preferably a 4cyl and yeah i know they were only made till 97)
-Toyota Paseo

If there is anything else you can add to the list LMK.

There is really no car that i am interested in. and remember i'm not into modding.

Yea I'm thinking a legacy or an outback since it would be a daily driver, AWD would be very nixe to have for the winter and rainy days.

Good luck with that. My '99 had 103,000 miles & a dent in the back and went for more than $6500, which was over $3,000 less than blue book. Many used ones near me have 80-100,000 miles and will still sell for $10,000+. Add to that the conversion to Canadian $$ and it may be nearly impossible.

Otherwise, I'd say a Subaru would be great

Why not a GM?

The W-Body makes for a great Daily.

As for an Import ... Corolla.

i picked up my 96 legacy wagon for $2200 with a few dents and a bit over 100,000 miles on the clock.

i'd say a gc series impreza or a legacy. subaru makes a nice dependable car and you can't beat them in snow.

02 Alero LIM failure twice. First time at 21k second time 3 month after warranty. Full rebuild both times. (cost me $2100 1st time)
99 z24 Oil pump failure (twice), headgasket failure, fuel pump failure.... 2 rebuilds from oil pump failure (all under warranty), re-ring not under warranty
00 Silverado piston slap

i just find GM to be really sub par. Alot of you guys might like em, but for reliability and repair costs... its unreal.

I cruised around for 3 years in a much cheaper car after the above GM's.... and i spent nothing on repairs. Just tune ups, oil changes etc.
In my family we have an Escort with 260k. Tune up, oil changes, timing belt, brakes, and exhaust.... no repairs.

My last car was a Civic. Never had a problem in one year. (its totalled now)

this is why i wont buy from GM. As soon as your warranty is up... Goodluck.

^^ that was supposed to say the LIM on the alero cost me $2100 the second time, not the first time.

Weird.

I have experienced the Exact opposite and My Family and I have owned over 7 GM vehicles in the past 2 decades.

It depends more on the model then anything else. N-Bodies are junk IMO ... I hear of nothing but constant problems ... and 3rd gen J-Bodies are up there. Never really an issue with W-Bodies, F-Bodies, or 2nd Gen Cavies (of which we have owned 3).

The wife and I picked up a 2002 Saturn SL1 for $6400 incl. tax & title. Only thing you really have to keep an eye on is the oil level. It might be a GM but alot of people seemed to have good luck with them with many of them going 150,000+mi. The place we bought ours from has a '92 with 248,000mi and still runs good.
