Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable to Return ...
These recognizable names will be used on Ford's less-recognized models.
Ford has announced that the well-known Ford Taurus name will return as a 2008 model, replacing the name of the current Five Hundred sedan. The exterior takes design cues from the Ford Fusion and the Ford Edge crossover, and the Taurus will offer a new all-wheel-drive system, standard electronic stability control and a new powertrain with an increase of 60 horsepower over the Five Hundred.
Joining the Taurus late in the summer will be the Taurus X which replaces the Freestyle, while the Sable will replace the Montego in the Mercury lineup.
"Taurus has been an icon for Ford's family sedan for more than two decades, and it's time to return this powerful name to where it belongs," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. "Consumer awareness of the Taurus name is double the Five Hundred that it's replacing, and awareness of Sable is triple that of Montego.
"The Taurus name today is still recognized by 80 percent of consumers," explained Fields. "In fact, it's the third strongest nameplate in the Ford lineup, behind F-Series and Mustang"
The new Taurus received more than 500 engineering changes from the current Five Hundred that makes it quieter, faster and safer. The new 3.5-liter Duratec V6 engine produces an estimated 260 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque teamed with the same new 6-speed automatic transmission found in the Ford Edge. AdvanceTrac electronic stability control is standard.
"Customers will find the 2008 Taurus delivers more of what they are looking for, including strong design, high-quality interior, power and performance, must-have features like Ford Sync and a great safety reputation," said Cisco Codina, Ford group vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service.
The New Taurus, Taurus X and Sable
The Taurus features the signature Ford three-bar chrome grille, a sculpted hood with sharp accent lines, and a new front fascia. At the rear the new taillights carry the horizontal design theme from the grille and a new fascia includes chrome dual exhaust tips.
Interior quietness is improved with a new sound package that includes expandable foam pellets and a new sound-deadening material called Sonosorb. The Limited features chrome side vents in the front fenders, chrome door handles and chrome mirror caps.
Features include a standard auxiliary audio input jack, available voice-activated navigation system, a DVD rear-seat entertainment system and factory-installed SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Ford Sync offers a new level of connection, control, simplicity and personalization for electronic devices such as cell phones and MP3 players.
The Taurus X updates the Freestyle with styling cues from the Edge, including the shape of the headlights and the three-bar grille. The hood, front fenders and front fascia are redesigned while the rear receives a new fascia, new taillights that are similar to Fusion and chrome dual exhaust tips.
Taurus X also receives the 260-horsepower 3.5-liter Duratec V6, 6-speed automatic transmission and standard AdvanceTrac electronic stability control. One-touch flip-and-fold second-row seats are new and a power liftgate is available.
The 2008 Mercury Sable receives the same powertrain upgrades and standard AdvanceTrac as the Taurus but features distinctive Mercury design elements, beginning with the signature Mercury satin aluminum waterfall grille. At the rear, unique LED taillights have predominantly white lenses with red accent stripes and are connected by a chrome strip on the lower edge of the trunk lid.
Inside, the Sable offers a refined, modern interior with unique trim options and two-tone seating surfaces with contrasting stitching. For a more high-tech look, Cyber Carbon is a dark high-gloss trim that resembles carbon fiber providing for a more traditional look, Guitar Maple or San Macassar wood grain accents will be offered.
