97 GTP for an 01 Protege ES-2.0??
Tuesday, October 10, 2006 4:03 PM
Well, I am thinking of getting rid of the GTP and getting something a little more economical for the GF to drive. I was at a small dealer today, that had a nice black 2001 Mazda Protege ES-2.0, 4 door, 5spd, A/C, CD player, summer tires/rims, winter tires/rims, new brakes, new timing belt, certified and e-tested. It was one owner, with all the original service records. The only thing I can see wrong, is the summer tires are in rough shape, but the winters would be going ASAP, and I can deal with the other tires in the spring.

The GTP, oh the GTP, I love that car, and don't want to see it go for, however, it needs winter tires ASAP, 2 new wheel bearings soon, brakes all the way around in the next 3-6 months, the A/C doesn't work, it gets decent gas mileage but the GF doesn't like springing for 94 octane gas, and frankly, I don't blame her.

So anyhow, I got the dealer to agree to a straight up trade, with me paying the taxes, which would come to about $600 or so. This seems like a pretty good deal to me, but I still told him I needed a day to think about it.

What do you guys/gals think?

Thanks.

agreed-I love GPs, but as they get older...

I am suprised that they would do a straight trade, most dealerships want to make something on every deal, mine did.

I say go for it. it will be more economical in the long and short term. They are fun cars too, and can be very attractive when tastefully moded.

what is this i hear about unreliable?

GP's are as reliable as anything you can get, as long as you take care of them. as with any car, there are certain things that fail, and others that are fine. i've seen GTP's with upwards of 200K miles, still running fine. saw one make a mid 13 second pass last year, original engine. not bad if you ask me.

mine's got 115K miles, cam'd, headers, pulley, tune, blah blah blah, and it's daily driven.

if you want a more economical car, that's fine, and i understand. i get 16-17 mpg in town. but dont use reliability as an issue unless your car is literally falling apart. you could replace the brakes and bearings and have a good length of life left in the car. it should be less than $600 to do that, plus you dont need to worry aobut registration and license plate crap. and you know it'll last, you're not goin into the dark like you would with the new car.

im not sayin this because i like GTP's. just my opinion that you should be very very careful when swapping out vehicles.

and the reason he agreed to a straight up trade is he knows he can get an extra $2K out of the GTP. those dont sit on lots for more than a couple weeks before they pull in sticker price

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

my friend's old GP was an 02. it had 175k miles on it, and has gone through 3 trannies...sorry, but i can't call that reliable...

let's not bring up his windows, which stopped functioning earlier this year...all of them...2 needed motors, one needed all new guts in the door, and the driver door needed a new switch...then there's the computer. he's been through 4 of those...

he musta been HARD on that car. mine's a '97. sure it's "only" got 115K miles on it, but it's got it' original tranny, and it holds up just fine to normal driving, though it doesnt like the cam much. the windows are slow, but any 9 year old huge ass windows will slow down now and then. again, take care of the car, it'll last forever. but, if it's already hurtin, to for the mazda

nope...he's no harder on his cars than most consumers. his 79 truck is still running beautifully, but the GP didn't last long.

I agree. GP's are one of the more reliable cars GM ever made.

everyone i know that has a grand prix loves them. there fast and nice looking. my friends got a 1998 with a little over 90K on it bought it off my uncle. he has never had to put any money into the car other then normal things like oil change. my parents had a 04 grand prix and it was never in the shop for 1 thing. it had over 50K on it in a year and the thing was a great car. so if 1 person has a bad one that dont mean there bad @!#$y cars. a girl in my school has a white GT 98ish she hit a deer took out a pole and was side swiped at a party. and that car still drives like new. and she still has it. the mazda is a nice car but im not to crazy on how they look and the power they have. i would keep the GP or look at another car other then the mazda.

The protege handling is incredible, but the power delivery is nothing to get excited about.

Which car is safer would be my question.

Also don't expect much more than 28MPG highway despite what the dealership may tell you.

Well, we were all ready to make the deal when the GF asked me if the Protege would be comparable power wise to the GTP. I laughed and said no. She said I want to keep it then. I told her okay, and we went to Canadian Tire and I bought got some winter tires for it right after we left the dealer.
