Help me decide on a new car..
Friday, September 08, 2006 10:51 AM
Ok heres the thing, i just started working fulltime, so ill be pulling in some nice sized checks. Im gunna sell my J and i wanna get something fun and i need some ideas. Ok so im looking at a 4cyl or v6 (no v8's) gunna look into getting a loan for around $10,000-$12000, + w/e i get for the J. So I need ideas for cars i can possibly get with in teh $10-15000 price range. Im not lookin for trucks, something with reasonable gas mileage. So ya, gimmie some ideas, what would YOU buy if you had the same budget etc..

Buy an early 90's Camaro V-6, and turbo it. Not as popular as your everyday V-8 Camaros.

Here's my list if I had roughly $15k to spend on a used car right now:

2004+ WRX
SRT-4
2000's Toyota Tacoma

If you played your cards right, you could pick one up, turbo it, and still have money left over for other things, like rims and tires.. or whatever you please basically.

2000 BMW 323i Sedan.
you can find one in Canada with low 100k under $16,000.
it's not the most powerful car, but they're rwd, and perfectly balanced.

Get an inline 6cylinder Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee.

They will last forever!!! One you go off roading you'll fall in love.

I miss my jeep

yes and no.

The parts cost more, but the vehicles are more reliable than their american
counterparts. For example the alternator on my Jeep set me back 330cdn
while the same thing on a 2002 325xi would cost you no more than 450cdn.
I also called a few parts stores, and they told me they can order most parts
for a bimmer for a nominal premium.

Secondly, there are plenty of mechanics out there that work on bmws and
won't charge a fortune. I almost bought a 2002 325XI this week (I also live
in canada and we don't have a bmw dealership in my town), so I had to
do some research. I found a bmw mechanic that works out of his place for
$50/hour (and he's been working on bimmers for 30 years now). I'm sure
you could find a bmw mechanic that charges a fair rate too.

Jeeps are great (I've had mine for 2 years now, and when I get my bimmer,
I'm passing it along to my step dad). The 4.OL is hard to destroy; if there was
ever a nuclear war, the only thing that would survive is cockroaches and the
4.0L inline 6. The only problem is that Jeeps are real fuel piggies (and they
like to rust under the doors). Other than that, they're rock solid vehicles.

^^^ For the bmw, are they/can they be pretty peppy? Compaired to a stock 2.4l cavy (current car) would you say there faster? I love the look of bmw's, thats probably the only 4door id concider getting. Nice an classy Ill have to research them more. How is it on gas?

For the most part, the 325xi I test-drove was very spry, (and the awd steptronic
325xi is among the slowest bimmer in north america -- probably similar in speed
to a 320i 5spd). Having said that, it felt much stronger than my old 3.1L V6 Sunbird,
and on par with my modified 4.0L Jeep (intake/ 62mm TB/ TB spacer, headers +
2.5" exhaust). Allot of bmw owners say their 184hp 2.5L feels like it makes 220hp.

The most important thing you must remember is handling, handling, handling...
That's where bmw really shines above the rest. Of course they also have great fit
and finish, and the 3 series is surprisingly roomy up front.

I'm hooked on bimmers, and I'm saving my christmas bonus to put towards an
e46 this coming spring. If you decide on one, than definitely do some research;
check edmunds.com (for specs) and e46fanatics.com for some extra info. Just
be warned, a few of the guys on e46fanatics can be a bit arrogant (just ignore
them)

good eye. yes, they're 18x9" Cobra replicas. I had them on my Jeep for a while
but I removed them, and I have the, up for sale. I decided to buy a bimmer sooner
than later and pass my Jeep to my step-dad. He's not an 18" rim kind-of-guy, so it
made sense to remove them (while they're still new), and put them up for sale.

Mmm im thinking i wont bother with the bmw, no matter how much i like the looks, i swore id never get one lol. I like Domestics Plus im a pretty big guy, im almost too tall to fit in the cavy :S, need leg room lol. The camaro idea is still tempting. Im just wondering how big of a difference in mpg id notice between the v6 and v8. Im not a tard i know there will be a difference, but im not sure how much. I like the sound of a v6 and turbo as suggested before, do you think that would be fun to drive?

Holding out over import/domestic is lame. Especially when you buy used, cause the import/domestic company doesn't even see your money.

The BMW has way more interior room and niceties than any Cav.

LS1's get better mpg than most people assume. Esepcially if you don't beat on it all the time. And if you turbo a V6, you're looking at crappy gas mileage anyways (especially comparing a 5 speed V6 with a 6 speed V8).

to each his own right?

Buy what will make you happy; just do me a favour and don't "swear-off"
any brand without having a solid reason. For example, I swore off Sony
products because every single Sony CD and DVD player I bought broke
weeks after the warranty expired. "Swearing off" sony just for the sake
of swearing off a brand is a real injustice to yourself.

Ya I guess your right, ill just have to look around. But ive always been partial to Domestics, i love that v8 rumble but i dunno, we'll see. I guess a smaller car like that could be fun. Keep the ideas coming though. The bmw you suggested seems to be going for like 12-17k, i was thinking of like 12k tops Got any other suggestions for a little less $$??

I can tell you that SpcmnSpff302 was right. GM V8s are better
on gas than most people expect. The 500hp 7.0L ZO6 gets
better gas mileage than my 190hp 4.0L inline 6. Just do your
research and buy what YOU like.

Hmm I never thought a v8 could get decent gas millage :S I had a explorer for like a month, it was a v6 though and it went through $20 in gas in like.. 2 days lol, that kinda turned me off of v6 and v8's for awhile but i suppose a v8 car must get better milage than my old explorer did cuz of the weight difference alone. Im not saying i dont like bmws, i think there looks are very sleek and sexy, but theres just something bout a v8 rumble that gets me going lol, so your saying a z28 v8 might actually be better than a z28 v6 turbo'd?? Or did i hear you wrong?

  • smaller engines in larger vehicles burn more fuel because they have to work harder

  • some engines are designed better than others

  • trucks are geared differently than cars

  • 4x4/ awd vehicles burn more fuell

  • poorly maintained engines burn more fuel

  • honestly man, please do your research. check edmunds.com for specs and
    www.fueleconomy.gov for mpg info
