Need Help With A Problem On Dodge Ram Trucks...
Friday, August 18, 2006 5:05 PM
My friends 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 has a problem, whenever he is on the highway doing roughly 110Km/h - 120Km/h on Cruise Control his engine revs about 200-300 RPM's. Anyone know what the problem could be? Its the V8 engine if it makes any difference. Oh and its quite noticable when it revs too, not just the sound but you can actually feel the truck sort of "jerk." Any help is much appreciated.

My camaro does the same thing at certain speeds. If you're at a certain speed the cruise lets the engine go at idle (sort of we'll say to make it easier) then it gets below speed it kicks in again going faster bringing RPM's up. Kind of like that bad driver who accelerate, lets off, accelerates lets off.

Does it do it at any other speeds? Try going just a little faster or a little slower. Unless i'm just thinking of something totally different in which case ignore me. If i'm getting your question right then theres not much you can really do.

How many miles on the truck? They are known for tranny problems w/ the autos.

Rabbit - It only does it at those speeds.

Sappy - Not sure how many miles/kilometers it has and he just got the tranny rebuilt so i'm pretty sure its not the tranny. Atleast hopefully its not the tranny.

My dads durango with the 4.7 did the exact same thing on the highway also sometimes when you turn the ac on, turned out it was the TPS (throttle position sensor)

I had this happen to my dakota, this was right after i had my stock gears swapped in for some 3.55's. check to make sure there is enough differential fluid and it has the right amount of Chrysler friction modifier in the rear end. the pinion seal that was put on mine had a factory defect and some fluid leaked out causing my posi unit to start engaging and unlocking at high speeds, this made my truck pull to one side and the revs would go up when it engaged. the seal was changed and synthetic fluids with a little extra friction modifier and poof probrem gone. if this doesn't work you can try cleaning the IAC ( Idle Air Control) and check the tps. hope this helps !

Sounds like a TPS or Transmission issue....sounds like its going in and out of overdrive or something...kinda stuck in between gears.
