Project Car!

Ok, so here's the deal-ieo.

My dad and I have been looking for a project car for about a half a year now. I've been checking mostly local stuff (news papers, magazines, internet). Nothing that was even close to diecent came up. By diecent, I mean a car with a semi-diecent body and a useable frame, for under $4,000.

Well, I finally googled restorable cars, and found this site.

CTC Auto Ranch(cheesy name but hey)

And we've found a 1971 Pontiac Firebird

Pontaic

It seems that everything is there. I've e-mailed them and give them a call tomorrow morning. As you can see he wants $3000 for it. It seems that it's a good deal. What do you guys think?

^^^ what he said, but it could be decent but you most definitely will want to swap that engine out.
Keep us posted.

Check the underneath of it for rust really well. The subframes, were the leaf springs mount, floors and trunks are notorious for rusting out on 2nd gens, as well as the whole body; lower fenders, doors, 1/4's, rear window, etc. For 3 grand that better be 100% rust free, be running, 100% complete with a decent interior, and a CLEAN TITLE, because the body doesn't look that straight as advertised and it's not worth much because it's not a v8. It sucks that's it's a 6cyl, but it could be good that's it's a manual. Throw a 400 or 455 with a 4 speed and a formula hood on it and it would be sweet.

Does that have the pontiac ohc straight 6 in it?

My friend bought a 73 firebird years ago and it was really rusted bad underneath but the body was decent. The subframe and rearend literally fell out of it trying to jack it up.

I like the 71 monte carlo, 71 cutlass conv, and 64 impala ss that are in that same price range that's listed on their site. Keep in mind that it's a junkyard and they probably didn't pay hardly anything for any of those cars, so they'll come down in the price....

Thought Hard & Jonathan: Heh...never thought of that. Me or my dad will be calling them within the next hour or so to figure out whats up with the car. And we will definatly be asking a lot of hard questions

Rob: Good point. I hope that they would be willing to come down. Use my mad talking skills to get the price down

This site (so far) is the best one I've come across. The prices are farily diecent, and the cars are some what presentable (i.e. are not packed like sardines, tires are inflated, etc.)

I guess if it doesn't work out. It's back to looking. There were some 3rd gen Camaro's that were for sale too...we might have a look at those if the firbird doesn't come through.

Those poor poor GTOs..

Not a bad looking Firebird not too rough becareful of the Bondo body work you may find though.. Other then that the body looks pretty straight just some basic dents that should be able to be pulled out.

Had to change sig because some dickhead is mad it went 1 letter over size

Re: Project Car!

We gave "the ranch" a call.

They don't know if the car has a title, AND, the guy that they got the car from, is probably going to be buying it back.

Not only that, but I asked for a quote from a shipping company...$980 to ship it up to Minnesota...

They will be posting up some more pictures I guess...and I doubt they will go much below their posted price. Things are looking some what dim...

BUT...I was talking with my dad after we got off the phone with them...and we might be getting something newer and closer to home...possibly a 300ZX (talk about totaly switching sides)

So I dunno...hopefully we have it figured out by wednesday.

hahahaha what a joke!!! That place is out of their mind!!! Now I can see why most of those cars have been sitting there for 20+years

That car was probably an impound and they can't get the title that's why the old owner is coming to get it(he has the title) Never buy anything you plan to put on the road without the title.

Keep looking you'll find something. Check craigslist, the autorader, and ebay daily something will turn up. Get something local so you can go look at it. If you're looking for something newer a 5.0 or an L98/LT1 car would be a good cheap car to build.

You can always plan a vacation to go out west or south and pick up a rust free car and drive it back. I plan to do that someday soon....

Well...I took some of the things you guys all said and the fact that it would cost almost $1000 to ship it up here to heart. And decided to @!#$ the whole idea...with the firebird.

I've found a 64 Olds 88 with a 394.

LINKY!

I've talked to the guy, and basicly the car is ready to go to paint *thumbs up* but its about a 5 hour drive...and the photos havn't come over the internet yet. But I talked with the guy last night and he kind of vented some frustration on me...which was interesting.

Turns out the first 394 he had, he took to a shop up in Duluth (the car is north of Brainerd) and I guess the guy that was suppoed to be working on the engine started to part the thing out and started to sell it

So he found another one, and so yeah. Fingers crossed on this one

PICTURES!!!

It looks like it has a landau top...but...I tried looking it up and it doesn't seem that a landau top was an option in the 60's...

More research!

So its a pretty good chance that my dad and I are going to go up and look at it this sunday. So yeah...pictures for you guys.

i love that body style

Re: Project Car!

That actually doesn't look too bad.... what is the price on it?

Keep in mind if you buy that car that parts are almost non exsistent. Pretty much no reproduction restoration stuff avaible and good used parts are hard to find. I had a 66 olds 98 and I looked for a mint rear bumper for 5 years and came up empty handed. Mine had that cool satin and vinyl interior so that 88 might have it as well. I think that a vinyl top was an option in the 66 olds owners manual but I don't remember seeing a cloth top, but anything is possible...

I'm sorry, but that car kicks some serious ass! Freaking go for it. Take in consideration what Robtco99 said though. It was good advice.

looking at it i dont think he needs to worry about finding body parts, just maybe fixing/tweaking them

Quoted for truth.

Car looks pretty rust free. Cant really tell til we see the underside though. What does the interior look like?

Good Luck!! Looks like a great project. Older cars will burn a whole in your pocket faster than ANY other type of car. It's seriously an addiction.
Start saving....your gonna need the $.

Re: Project Car!

yes but unlike newer cars, when you restore an old car, you can actually get a lot of that money back
while we've dumped a lot of money into the mustang, my dad got it appraised and it got appraised for 16,500 bucks
so if anything happened to it, wed get that much back from insurance (i.e. stolen or totaled or whatnot) or if we sold it we could easily get that much
