hey guys, are f-body keys the ones with computer chips in em? if so, how long have they been using that? and when, if ever, did they stop.
thanks
Andy
it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

You know if you dont like the chip for some odd reason (or the 100 dollars for a key) when you have a PROM custom burnt for the car you can have the disable VATS (vehicle anti-theft system).
1999---has it.
Bypassed VATS on mine with a $.05 resistor.

I think 89 might have been the first year for VATS in the f body. I had a spare ignition key made for my 91 T/A with the chip a few years ago at the dealer and I think it was around $20.
Our 89 IROC-Z had one....can't remember if our 86 Camaro had one or not?
I believe the first time they used the VATS is in the TPI. Which means an 86 would have one as long as it was an Iroc-z would have it.
$100 dollars for a key? from where? I don't think the 87 firebird formula I drove had them.

A lot of places cant or wont make them. So if you go to the dealer they'll gernally charge from 50-100 bucks depending on your location. I know my mother-in-law had a 96 monte caro with the chip in the key. Cost 75 for a new key. They want 120 for a new key for my Explorer.
Its a good setup and a great idea. No fuel unless you have that key, but like anything else there's ways around it if you're that hard up to steal a car.
mine has one. my buddies 88 doesnt but he can start it then take out the key
