Wanted

Whenever I have any type of discussion with my dad about cars, he always brings up his day and all the cars his buddies used to have and race with. Theres a real gleam in his eye about all of it, then he ALWAYs mention how it was stolen and parted out. About a year ago I started to entertain the idea of getting one and modding it and restoring it in secret, then in a year or two when its ready shock the hell out of him when its rumbling in the driveway and toss him the keys. I think it would be the ultimate thing I could do for him and the fact that he would have no idea it was being built would make it even better.

So besides ebay I been looking around for a car of this spec for a few thousand, preferably with a good running clean motor, not too much rust, primered is fine, im looking to paint in a certain color he used to have. So something structurally intact but not needed to be finished in the way of interior or exterior

Anyone know of some good jbo like sites for 60s mustangs, I know older cars are easier to work on but its totally different from what im used to working with so Im going to need to learn, or places to aquire one fitting this description other than ebay, I dont really care about matching numbers and all that. I'm looking for a solid running piece. The rest ill take care of on my own

I know a guy who's selling a 66 289 automatic coupe for around $7000. It's actually in very nice shape - no rust, good body, runs great. When I looked at it before, the only real work needed was on the interior, and that was just a new carpet and steering wheel. I can talk to him if you're really interested.

Vintage Mustang Forum

How much are you looking to spend? Check your local paper classifieds, CraigsList, etc. Check often, good deals (especially on Mustangs) are gone fast. Like I just saw a project fastback on CraigsList that was sold within 15 minutes of being put up.

If you haven't found this already:

collectorcartraderonline.com

Kinda like autotrader, but for vintage cars. Give it a shot.

Sweet deal! I actually gave my Dad and Mom my 95 Mustang GT. I bought it in November and stored it at my brothers house. I gave it to him and my mom on Easter. They loved it and drive it like crazy! I thank God that I was givin the opprotunity to do something like that. My Dad loves Mustangs and he never bought one cause he always had an excuse to spend his money else where and my mother always wanted a vert. Go for it man and do it. I know it will take a long time to find the right car but it is out there. It took me 6 months to find the right car. As far as sites just google and you should find some.

prob about 5-10k from what ive seen, and pretty much every single one on ebay always sells there was one for 4k that was a total steal a few months ago from NY, fully restored with no rust same year and engine as what im looking for

theres not much point of having an automatic in a car like that, its gotta be a 4 speed, im trying to recreate something close to what he had, but in order to do that I dont want something that is tooo finished, because I have to mold it into what im thinking

Too bad you're not near me. I know a guy selling a 64 1/2 mustang coupe all original un-molested for 1500. Wish I had some cash i'd pick it up.

wow um had you said something last year, i could sold you the one my sister and dad were gonna do
it was a 66
had a 289
it was an auto
but we had a 4 speed top loader that we traded for power steering and suspension parts
we sold the car and some parts for far less than 5k to my uncle and cousin

you could always swap. a factory-original 4-speed Mustang is gonna sell for more than it would cost to buy an automatic car and convert it over

So you're looking for a coupe? You'll have a hard time finding a decent fastback for that kind of money...

You can find auto's cheap. Why not swap in a built T5 that way you'll have an overdrive? Their is still a lot of 64-66 stangs out there, but finding one that is a v8 and the shock towers or floors are decent might be hard for a few thousand.

I kinda like to do the same thing for my dad one day. He always talks about his first car a white 65 valiant with a 273 hi-po and 4 speed. He bought it for $75 lol

My dad only wants to build a mustang as well...

...those old fords are lame, who would want a classic ford anyway?

Heh, good luck on the search. It is hard to find a decent priced pony that isnt rusted beyond repait (at least in my area.) as long as its a 289 it's all gravy.

Wow, that is the most unselfish thing I have heard in a long time. That is a great thing you are trying to do.

I have a simular story, but it was my Dad's '70 Cuda. It only had a 340 in it, but he borrowed it to a friend and he never heard from him again. I have a baby boy, so I can't afford to do something great like that.

A lot of respect to you though. Good luck.

Manual cars from the '60's are bitches to drive. Hard clutch, rough tranny's, etc. A 289/C4 combo is perfectly fine, makes it much easier to drive around town and isn't much slower (if at all). Especially if you get some good gears. Not to mention the lower cost, cause everyone wants a 4 speed.

you could always get the body and resto it but put a modern drivetrain in

well my dad didnt have any trouble with his 4 speed when he had it, if you cant drive it , you shouldnt own it, no modern stuff its gotta be carbed, my dad dispises the newer tech and i cant say i blame him, that old stuff is SUPER easy to work on

honestly , i basic fuel injection will be alot easier to work on than a carb , and have better driveability and milage

i used to think that way tell i started working on the new stuff , and found out older isnt always better

its 1 of the reasons my elco will prob get a LS2 and 6spd
