Ford/Shelby GT500
Tuesday, June 06, 2006 4:49 AM
I received my issue of Motor Trend with the front cover picture of the new GT500. I have to say, Ford is providing alot of performance for the money! While I'm not crazy about the GT500 front end styling(or the whole retro styling period), the one item that should have been at least be updated was the Cobra emblem. The cobra emblem on the new Shelby GT500 just doesnt isnt menacing enough when compared to the Dodge Viper snake emblem. A new Cobra emblem would also take some of the edge off of the over-retro styling of the car by being a new 21st century performance emblem recognizable on the street, not from the late 1960's. Anyone have an opinion on this?

They had on the local news that you can't touch these at sticker and they're going into the $60,000 range on e-bey
Cool car but $60,000 worth of cool ? Mmmmm I'm not so sure.

My only gripe about that car is it has 100 more hp than the vette... and the vette still pulls away.. The engine has the numbers to compete with the z06 and it can't touch the regular vette.

it may be a " touch" heavy

They were running high 12's in the issue. As Neal said, I think weight is the issue. 500hp and high 12's just don't jive. It was a cool article, though. The testors drove the car from California to New York to the site of the 1964 World's Fair, which was where the first Mustang debuted.

The number Ihara and Guzowski will most likely recite when describing the Shelby Cobra GT500 is 450, as in 450 horsepower and 450 pounds-feet of torque generated from a supercharged 5.4-liter DOHC V-8 engine. The 5.4-liter engine was first put into service in the limited-edition 2000 SVT Mustang Cobra R, a car that Car and Driver magazine ran from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and from 0 to 100 in 11 seconds -- without a supercharger.

The GT500 could benefit by a drop in the curb weight. Still, it is pretty fast for a 4,000 lb car!

considering its not aiming to be a cheap supercar, i wouldnt expect a mustang to outrun a vette
mustang is in the same class as the charger, camaro, firebird, gto, and challenger
i still get baffled when someone compares any mustang to a vette
(unless its some racing type mustang and a racing type vette designed to be in the same class)

^ ^ ^ ^ Good point. The Vette is a sports car the Mustang is not.

Sports cars are classified as a 2 door 2 seater. Usualy a roadster but it can be a hard top. Well thats what a sports car classicly is, but I know some people consider the RX-8 a sports car (its not) and such but a sports car has always been a 2 seater.

Weird... both the C&D and MotorTrend articles rate it at 500hp. The MotorTrend article isn't online yet, but it's the one I quoted above. Here is the C&D one: Article. Running the times it is, 450hp seems more believable, though.

well if you want to speed it up some for acceleration. Change the gearing in the rearend. bmp it up a lil bit and should be up there with the vette. I think it's a otherwise bad ass car. Ford got their stuff together with the mustang development.

y'know, the horsepower output of these cars has been confusing me ever since they revealed it. the original horsepower output was 500 hp out of the 5.4L twin screw supercharged engine. then i heard they changed to an eaton roots style blower, a less efficient blower, and lost 50 horse. all in the name of price. so im pretty sure the output is 450. i dont know for sure, though.

i compare the GT500 to the vette for a few reasons. it's within price range of the base model vette, it's power output is around that of the vette, it's the only ford vehicle within the vette's pricerange that could compete with the vette. and finally, because after 'stang owners drop a couple thousand in them, THEY'LL be comparing their cars to vettes.

Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

Yes it is quite odd. I don't think we'll get a final answer until the car is finally available. I found a few articles via google, at least one from autoweek that stated 475hp/475tq.

yeah um ive never met a stang owner that says anything about their car compared to a vette.
mustang is a muscle car
vette is a sports car
its like comparing an aveo and a corolla
you can have some similarities but they are both in different classes

The GT500 has a cd of 0.38. Believe it or not but that is super car territory and yes I do realize it is not slippery. The C6 Z06 is rated at cd 0.32 and standard C6 Vette is at cd 0.29.
For comparison purpose coefficient of drag.
2007 Chevy Tahoe: 0.36
Dodge Viper: 0.41
Lamborghini Diablo: 0.39
GM's EV1: 0.18
Mercedes C350: 0.27

Aerodynamics could defitnatly play a role on the time, but I strongly believe the weight is playing the bigger role.
Dave brought a good issue. Is it really 450HP or 500HP? Because 450HP sounds better with those times. Ford says 450, media says 500. I'll stay with Ford's #s

The 1979 Datsun 280ZX had a cd of .385 and was considered very aerodynamic when compared to Corvette and Mazda RX-7. The previous 1978 280Z had a cd of .46. Hard to believe 30+ years later a big SUV is more aerodynamic!
