JEEP/ SUV Guys... wheel/tire question
Thursday, May 18, 2006 12:30 AM

I admit it's a bit of a taboo topic to own a non-lifted Jeep, but
I would appreciate some advice other than "dude 4.5" rough
country + 33" that mofo". I was tempted to do a 3" lift on 31s
... lifted jeeps look freakin-awesome, but I seldom go offroad,
and the prospect of decreased gas mileage makes me cringe
(if you own an 4.0L i6 you know what I'm talking about).

So here's my deal, I bought a set of 18x9s with a 24+ offset
and a set of 255/55/18 Pirelli Scorpion Zeros for my XJ. I had
them installed last week, and my ride drove like garbage.
The steering was heavier, and it pulled to the right quite a bit.
The Stock wheels on an XJ are 16x7 ?? offset on 225/70/16
tires. I'm back to my stock rims until I figure out this stupid
stupid STUPID mess.

Is my steering heavy because the tire profile is wider? are the
rims too wide? is the offset wrong? I mean, what the heck is
the correct offset on XJs? All the websites claimed I needed
255/55/18 tires, but they bounce offsets anywhere from form
20 to 42.

so where did i go wrong guys (besides not lifting it that is).

The OE size for 80-01 Cherokees is 16x7 and 15x6 (depending on what model you get) so you are right there.

As far as off-set, they have a low to medium offset so it should be between 0 and +20 offset. Usually the +45, 40, 35 offsets are for front wheel drive vehicles.

Your steering is heavy probably because of the 18" wheels you are pushing underneath. Is it just hard to turn the vehicle or are there other symptoms that makes it feel like the steering is awkward. Did you get the tires balanced when they were mounted, that could of cause the rig to move to one side.

Hope some of that helps somewhat.

oh.....Rough Country lift? What are you talking about. Get a 4.5" long arm kit, 33's and call it a day already, j/k

Have a good one,
Justin

I was under the same impression, and that's why I went with a 24 offset.
I thought I was close. The problem is that allot of websites give different
offsets. Some say you can use a +42 fwd offset, and no one has the
exact answer. I actually saw a cherokee with a set of 16x7.5 rims with a
+42 offset. I also had someone else tell me a 0 offset was a must (good
luck finding an 18" rim that looks factory... most 0 offset rims are chrome
- I hate chrome).

could you explain the "pushing underneath" bit a little more. If an 18x9
24+ offset rim pushes underneath than what offset would I need on an
18x8 rim? Check http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
do I need to increase or decrease my inner clearance?

and yes... I had the rims balanced. The tire place told me that certain
tires have quirky driving characteristics, and that a wheel alignment
might be due.... I call BS. I got the tires from a BMW X5. why would
BMW chose a quirky tire on a $60,000 suv? No just that, the Pirellis
cost me allot more than the rims.... I'm more willing to buy different
rims than get new tires.

just make gas cheap again, and i'll put a set of 37" swampers, and a cargo
rack on the thing lol

What I meant by "pushing underneath" is just how much heavier those wheels might be over stock comparison. I know that when I did my upgrade to 32's the steering felt a bit heavier than it did when I was driving stock.

Were you able to figure anything out as of late?

you're going to laugh (well you should laugh), but I'm officially sick
of bigger rims. I've owned this jeep for 2 years and my goal has
always been an 18" rim upgrade.. when I finally research and save
up for a new tire package -- everything goes wrong.

I spoke to another rim/ tire expert this weekend, and through some
weird stroke of coincidence, he has a ford ranger with a set of 18x9
on the same set of Pirelli Scorpion Zeros. He told me his ranger
also drives like garbage, but its mainly due to his Pirellis. He also
said the additional rolling mass was causing my grief on top of the
tire brand.

btw... here is the ONLY pic I took of my Jeep with the 18s on. lol. I
photo-chopped my neighbour's house because I live in the ghetto.

As of now. I'm looking at a new plan.... wear out my crappy tires,
and look into a set of 235/70/16 bfgoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires
for my stockers.... maybe a 1-3/4" Rusty's BB lift (just for the look).
Mind you, I still have to install my banks headers and decide on a
new muffler... I'm expecting another install disaster lol.

That looks really nice with those 18's on it. Too bad you weren't able to get it to rid right. Your XJ is looking really cool.

Have fun installing the header, i've helped a buddy of mine install his since he got the infamous cracked manifold an it took us a little bit of time (a lot of stubborn bolts and tight spots to wrench at).

I hear the 4wd.com muffler is pretty nice. I am planning on running their cat-back setup once my decides to take a dump on me. They have a stainless and regular cat-back set ups for a decent price and the muffler they run isn't too loud.

Have a good one,
Justin

I thought it looked OK too but it was a real pain to drive. If I ever lose
my senses again and decide on 18s -- I'm going with an 18x7.5 or
18x8 rim with a 235/55/18 tire. The 18x9/255 combo was killing me.

I'm not going to install the header myself. I know its a real butt-nutter;
it will be a challenge just to convince my muffler shop to get it done.

and WOW. 4wd.com has some really great stuff. their catback looks
decent too, but I was looking at the 5x8x18 2.5" muffler. It's virtually
the same muffler from their catback system (only it also has a 2.5"
inlet unlike their cats 2.25IN/2.5OUT set-up. I want to upgrade my cat
to a 2.5" unit as well.
