Pontiac Montana 2000 transmission swap
Monday, April 17, 2006 10:44 AM
I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana and a few weeks ago my transmission (4T65E) failed so I replaced it with a transmission out of a 2003 Pontiac Aztec.

As far as I can tell the final drive / gear ratios are the same, but I could be mistaken.

I am getting a fault code of P1810 (TFP position sensor) from the PCM and it is also getting torque lockup occasionally.

Apparently sometime in 2002 the TFP assembly was updated (TSB #020730050) and I am concerned that my PCM need to be reprogrammed to accommodate this change.

The transmission is in what I presume limp mode and I don’t get top gear. Although on one particular day (just as the first fault code first registered) it was shifting in all gears.

Hopefully you can help with the above problem.

No J-body came with a 4T65E.. You'll likely have more luck on www.automotiveforums.com where I see you've already posted

This code sets when an invalid combo of the switches is set. Is it possible to check the contacts of the switch or just replace it? Probably is a sealed unit and will have to be replaced.

Yea, ummmm. I used to have a J-body...

Sorry if I am posting in the wrong forum, I was looking at some of the topics and you guys seem to be very knowledgable.

The problem is that GM made a change to the switch assembly (2002-2003) and they cut down on the number of switches, which may or may not have altered the sequence. I have the sequence for the older transmission but not for the new one.

Anyone shed some light on the newer sequence.

If you could find out if they had diff part numbers. If that is the case then there is about a 50% chance that you found the problem. They sometimes but rarely change the part number without any changes in the part.

I would contact a local trans builder and see how easy it would be to swap the part or just live with the SES light. Could program out the DTC if you have a PCM tuner.

One other trick I thought of is find a vin of a newer car with your engine and the new trans. Flashing the computer to that VIN and seeing if the new code fixes it.

Why not get a Trans for the Van, instead of a wanna be truck? Arent some Aztecs AWD too? (It is funny to see the FWD version with truck tires). I'd see what the dealer could do for you, Tech 2 is an awsome tool.
