Cobalt...Time Attack...Win

I have searched. I am surprised nobody has brought this up. I do have a hard time weeding though the search feature on this site.

Redline Time Attack results

To me, this is big news. Just look at the level of cars that were beat.

I watched the show and had to laugh when one of the import guys cried that the GM car had factory support. They really didn't do an all out expensive built. The car was relatively tame.

Eh, it's a Cobalt. I still don't like it. I'll take the Evo, the Skyline GTR, S2000, RX-7, and the Supra.

So would I.

But this car really smoked not only the competition, but cars that it should never be competing against.

To me this is big news. I would have expected on a GM site to be a chant of victory. Especially a car with so much in common with the J.

Just gotta say, they sure made that rear twisty beam handle.

This is not your regular Cobalt from tires to roof. ***It should be noted...

The Cobalt SS Supercharged including an added nitrous boost increasing the horsepower to 380 and torque to 387 lb.-ft. among other aerodynamic improvements and chassis tuning. The engine features an Eaton M-62 Gen 5 Hybrid supercharger, and delivers 283 horsepower at 6840 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm without the nitrous. It is also Stage 2+ equipped, using a smaller pulley than the Stage 2 kit available soon through GM Performance Parts to achieve even greater torque.

Some of the production Cobalt elements were replaced with carbon fiber counterparts, including the hood, doors, roof, decklid, rear wing, side rocker extensions and Sparco car seat. The vehicle’s glass has also been replaced with Lexan, and interior trim has been kept to a minimum. The end result is a vehicle weighing a mere 2,350 pounds.

Powell Motorsport, Lotus Engineering and Martin Technologies provided GM Performance Division with vehicle preparation, logistical support and engineering collaboration for the Toyo Tires Time Attack event.

I tried searching again. Anyone have better luck with the evil search button. I would like to read the comments.

Sure the Cobalt was prepared.

So were most all the other cars.

Even though so much work went into the Cobalt, I'd like to know how much work went into the other cars.

You are correct, but also don't forget to mention that none of the other cars that ran were anything close to factory stock either. Most of these cars were very heavily modified. If nothing else, at least this speaks to the modifiability of these cars, and how well they respond to those mods.

"The Time Attack Cobalt SS Supercharged coupe runs in NASA’s Unlimited class, which includes FWD, RWD and AWD vehicles. Following SEMA, it will race on Nov. 8 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in central California – the same track where it beat the best times of an 801-horsepower AWD, twin-turbo Nissan Skyline and a nitrous-charged Volkswagen Jetta."

From
CobaltSS.net

I mean really. Did you ever expect to hear that a FWD oxcart smoked the JDM world's god. In any circumstance short of getting to work cheaper. I got used to the eco program kicking butt at the strip. I never expected this success. I'll admit, I don't know who wrote these words. I'm just amazed they can be said. For real.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws here. But this event has culminated my long and loyal relationship with GM FWD cars, both in my personal life and professional. I have taken so many "shots on the nose" over my involvement with the GM FWD after-market. So many car shows I can recall standing proudly in front of many very nicely done GM cars, only to literally be scoffed at aloud because of it. Time and again I would be ridiculed by Honda drivers for modding a Cavalier over the deserving civic base model???? They really think....why bother.

Now, I'm left somewhat removed from the industry, only to see it all come together. Seemingly unnoticed. Hmm? And even at that, even the GM enthusiast are looking to reduce the victory. WTF.

So I just want to say. I hope they realize they just got beat by what equates to a fancy Cavalier. Skyline this baby!!!! Evo that. STI it up your own ass. Oh yah, shove that R where the sun don't shine. WooHoo.

Anyone have the video????

I guess the Powell auto guys know what they are doing. I'm sending them an X-mas basket this year.

Hey Craig, I'm with you on this one... the fact that ANY FWD could smoke AWD and FR cars in time attack is awesome, whether it had factory support or not.

Signal, C-west, Works, Tokico, and Hasport are HARDLY pushovers, even when stacked against a GM-backed cobalt. How much horsepower do you think those Evo's and Skylines had? I GUARANTEE it was in the high triple digits, and they got whooped on by a MAX 380 hp cobalt says something. Who cares how modified it was, do you think the rest of those cars were rocking just intake/header/exhaust?

But seriously Craig, stop posting this stuff, you're making me want a Cobalt and the Beetle is getting jealous!

Hmmm.

Over a second difference between first and second place. Even that's a pretty big difference. Over the course of a road race, that would equate to a fair lead.

I think the car had just under 300hp before the No2. I think they ran a 130 shot.
Sounds like the car was making some good power.

I did hear of a special intercooler used on this car. Anyone know anything about it?

the cobalt is a amazing car in race trim

Re: Cobalt...Time Attack...Win

Regardless of how modified the Cobalt is the other cars are also heavily modified and from what some of them started as ( skyline? Evo 8? ) to even try to take the cobalt down a notch with "its modified more" is pathetic.

Stop acting like the Cobalt won the race. The driver won it.

I bet if the Cobalt driver hopped into the Skyline, Evos, or S2000s he could rape the time he put down with the Cobalt.

Spoken like a true GM fan. lol

Sure, driver skill is involved, but....

Like Erik said, Hienricy is no spring chicken. Have you noticed most modern top drivers are very young. Their reaction times are far superior.

Hienricy didn't have a place to really show his driving skill. The track was empty during trials. No traffic to need an exceptional driver.

Do you really think the other teams brought their worst driver to compete. They must have at least been competent drivers. I'm not sure many tuners put their accountant behind the wheel.

Over three seconds between 1st and 5th. That's alot of driver for one lap.

The show is on again at 10:30 my time on Speed.

Re: Cobalt...Time Attack...Win

Stop crying the Cobalt won, End of discussion. It beat an EVO VIII, and a SKYLINE both are legandary cars with a world following almost of cult like status and one of our own cars knocked them down a notch and you want to say it was all the driver? Come on guys, if the driver won the race then why isn't the list only comprised of the drivers names with no cars listed?
