Close to bare bones for the WRX.
The first thing I noticed about the new Subaru Impreza WRX TR is the basic-looking stereo. So basic is its operation and visual appeal that using the system brought flashbacks ofloading five-inch floppies into a Commodore 64 computer. The four speakers don’t help much in enhancing its 80 watts of sound-amplifying power either.
To that I say......Good job, Subaru I mean it.
The TR in this WRX’s designation stands for "Tuner Ready." Since many WRX owners start customizing their cars the second they drive off the lot, Subaru decided to spec out a model just for them.
Why force a customer to pay for the six-disc audio system in the regular WRX when that standard unit will get swapped out for one with a TV screen shod with amplifiers, high-watt speakers and subwoofers?
That is the philosophy that inspired the TR. There is a non-leather steering wheel in case you have a Momo in mind, along with regular seats and unpainted side mirrors ready to be swapped for Sparco racing buckets and narrow WRC-style mirrors. The car has no side skirts, fog lights and a spoiler, because what custom Impreza is complete without a body kit? The TR also avoid the automatic climate control system.
Unlike the first stripped-down Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS in 2004, the TR leaves you with such basic amenities as air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, and even cruise control.
All 2006 upgrades are in full effect under the hood. The new, bigger-displacement 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4 with 230 hp provides ample thrust and more daily livability thanks to itsnewfound torque, up to 235 lb-ft from 217 lb-ft.
We think Subaru could further slash the price of this WRX by making the standard 17-inch sport wheels optional, since getting rid of factory wheels is usually the first thing a tuner will do.
With a base price of $24,620 (including $625 destination), the TR will save you about $1,000 off the regular WRX sedan. That may not seem like much considering what go-fast, look-fast parts can cost. But for many tuners, some of whom work two jobs to pay for their cars, a penny saved is a penny earned.

agreed, althought the last one had ugly headlights.
Good idea, but I think they should have knocked 4K off of it, then it would have sold.
I bet they make more $ off of this TR then they do of a reg REX.

Suspension, some nice 17's, and tons of engine work. I want one.
That's actually a pretty cool idea. I don't like the new front ends either, but I admire Subaru acknowledging what people are bound to do with the cars, and offering this package.

Take the AC and power options off it and drop the price another $1500-$2000 and I would be half tempted to go racing.

Kudos to Subaru for thinking of tuners but -$1K?
Why strip out the climate control? It's not like most tuners add it later.
I agree that wheels would have been a perfect place to cut costs(steels and hubcaps), they shoulda taken the radio out completely and left it wired and ready for a stereo. Put a very basic muffler and tip on it and not bother with all the extra engine plastic. All that and sell it for ~$3-4K less and there'd be very little reason buy any other car if you were looking for something to modify.
More companies should do that, especially for the radio. I have noticed a trend towards radios that are part of the dash sure they blend in real nice but if you want to upgrade it can be a real problem.

I am still a fan of the 04-05 front end look but props to Subaru for making a model that doesn't have the extras even though it would of been nice to cut some more things out of it.
Have a good one,
Justin
You could easily buy a regular WRX for $1000 more and all the options, strip it down and sell the parts privately and probably get more the 1G in return. Good idea, bad pricing.

my friend just bought an 06 wrx, not bad, they did decided on changing the front to something like how the new tribeca's look like. i can only imagine what the aftermarket goodies will hold for the newer engine. even though its stock 2.5 pushing 3 HP mopre than the older models. it'll handle alot more power with a higher stage turbo. anyone ever catch up on reading the wrx and wrx sti versions over in japan running the 2.5s? wow i say, and damn would be next what i have to say for the next couple of months for the aftermakret perofrmance aprts for the 06 wrxs. just my 2 cents.
There is already a company that makes a grille that fixes the current design. After seeing it and seeing the 06 in person, I like the new grille. The aftermarket option that gets rid of the center section and makes it all one peice makes the headlights look out of place.

^ ^ ^ pic of this?
I would like to see what it looks like.

Wow, what a rip off.. The company saves 3-4K by stripping it down, but only passes the 1K of savings to the consumer.. Then badge it as a "TR", for the "tunerz".. Are people really stupid? GM should have made the base 2.2 OHV cavalier, and call it the "Cavalier, TR edition", then raise the price of it to around 19K..
Sucker born every min I guess.

its a 2.5 block now. thsoe peice of @!#$ aluminum blocks in the 2.0's are toast after 300 hp. this thing is bad ass, its detuned from the factory in order to save insurance, a simple ecu flash brings it to 300 hp just like the sti, its a sick car and its almost making me change my mind about buying an evo.

Hasn't that urban legend been dismissed already? Ask GGT about his insurance comparing his GT vs. his Z06. IIRC, the Z06 is actually like $60 cheaper every 6 months.

Personally I like the TR the way it looks without the wings and things. Very stealthy.

front end doesnt flow ugly grill and then u have a nice sleek front and then the standard wrx hood stick which doesnt flow with the new look
Dump the wheels for steelies, and basic brakes (I'd dump the front end and put the old bug-eyed WRX front end). Cut $6000 off the price, done.
And deliver it to me for dec 24
If it's not network news, it's probably the truth getting out.
Some people are like slinkies: Not really good for anything,
but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them
down a flight of stairs.
theres a huge reason u need the stock 17's ((as i noticed everyone sayin they should rock steelies to save money)) the TR edition also comes with an upgraded braking system all around and the smallest wheel that will actually fit one the car is a 17" wheel..
my girlfriend traded in her '05 scion tc and picked up a white '06 wrx tr. she walked out the door only paying a little over $23,000 for it and this included the regular wrx spoiler at no additional cost.. her buying this car is what made me lose complete interest in my cavalier and the minute it sells, im gunna sell my jeep and go buy a subaru..
its insane to drive, especially in a foot of snow, although it is slower than my cavalier at the stock 12psi... i never had so much fun driving a car until i drove this one
