if any of you know what a Bertone X1/9 is, and especially have driven one, you'll appriciate this. (cliff notes at the bottom)
A good friend of mine had an '86 bertone X1/9, he got it for $300 from his high school where someone donated it as a shop car. the car drove fine, and was like a gokart with doors! steet legal and all. sure, it made the 0-60 run in 10 seconds... but you felt like you were flying! and best of all, it had a manual tranny. the thing wasnt pretty looking, the car was red, and the hood was black, and it had some fender damage, but it was great all the same. He brought it to work one day, and a guy walked in and asked him who owned the "little red car" out front. he said it was his, and the guy said that he was an avid Fiat/Bertone fan, and had some stuff he wanted him to see. my friend said ok, but promptly forgot. well, eventually the car's age cought up to it, and the alternator died. now, you cant just go buy a Fiat or Bertone alternator at y our local parts dealer, so we had to take it to an electrical company and have it rebulit. while this was going on, he was driving home from monticello one day, and saw an old X1/9 sitting by the side of the road witha "for sale" sign on it. he stopped by my house, picked me up, and we headed back out to look at it. ended up it was in decent shape, and the best part, there was a second car used for parts included in the deal! only problem was, he was looking for $2500 for the two, which was way more than either one of us had. so, we just kinda forgot about it. time passed, and my friend had to trade the X1/9 because of tranny issues (the lincage broke inside the case). he traded a guy straight up for an old beat up S-10, which he was going to sell to his brother. that was about two weeks ago, and still no truck, though the kid already has the X1/9. then comes yesterday, a guy walks into work. he looked familiar, but i wasnt sure where i knew him from. he goes over to my friend, and says, "hey, you have space to store those Fiats?" my friend give his him a "yeah, but i still dont have the money". and the guy, to our amazement said "i dont care, i'll give them to you if my son doesnt want them. we're moving, and i need to get rid of them".......... holy $h!t!!! did he really just say that? yeah, he did. if the guys son doesnt want the cars (which i doubt he will, he was with us when we were looking at them, and didnt seem interested at all) my friend gets the cars. he is in the proccess right now of trying to get his X1/9 back, and if he can, he'll have one extra fiat... and guess who might be gettin that second car? me! [/story]
cliff notes: guy we barely know who tried to sell us two X1/9's, one running, one parts car, for way too much eventually got sick of having two cars that he doesnt drive and gave my friend both cars!

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

Stats anyone. I had a Ghia that everyone commented on. But parts were a bitch to find.

do you mean you want specs on the car? and yeah, parts for these are not easy to come by. ebay is an X1/9 owners cheapest bet.

I used to have an '81, the thing had the famous no reverse gear, but with the targa top off it was a fun little car.
Better get a second parts car. Your gonna need it.
I had a friend with one in high school. It was fun when it ran.
I wonder if an eco would fit?
Rusted shock towers in the front were a serious problem.
Sweet. There used to be a couple around here but as usual in the rust belt they rusted away.

trust me, we know. we've been looking for parts for these things, but parts and cars are hard to come by.
we were toying with the idea of a motor swap. there can be a lot of space in there if you cut into the trunk space behind the engine compartment. i was wondering about the 2.0 s/c eco. that would be a fun little engine to have in a car that weighs that little. or a 3800, but that's a little too big. we might just build up the 1.5L that's in there. they can be cool little engines. a friend of mine that owns a car lot was trying to sell this guys other X1/9 (great shape, built for autocross, but was asking $3000 for it) and that thing felt like it hauled ass. yeah, it was still slow, but it didnt feel it! kinda like riding in a honda, you think you're the fastest thin on four wheels until you race somebody... then half of them still think they're the fastest thing on four wheels.

Wow, those are a lot better looking than I was imagining. And a 2.0 SC Eco swap would be sw33r.
First of all, I'd like to thank wesmanw02 for being such a Cobalt-nut-sucking tool.
Secondly, I'd like to thank Travis Kearny for being so entertaining.

yeah, they're pretty good looking considering what they were. actually, i think that's where the design for the Pontiac Fiero came from. if you look at the two cars, the Fiero is just a big X1/9.
Fiero
X1/9
and yeah, anything with 150+horses would be kick a$$ in that car.

I remember helping some girl that worked for my dad to push start her Fiat X 1/9 in the parking lot back in 1982. She said the car had alot of electrical problems. It was then I learned the phrase F-I-A-T "Fix It Again Tony".
