j-body FF Drifting!?!?
Thursday, January 06, 2005 5:47 PM
I'm about to drop a bomb on the whole j-body world. It all started with my first car, a 1990 Pontiac sunbird 4-door Automatic . I wanted to go fast, but it didn't take long to realize that with out a lot of money I wouldn't be doing that at, least not in a straight line. I already knew about drifting (thats FR/RWD) I thought those were the only cars that could drift.
Until I read a copy of import tuner were a civic was doing it FF/FWD drifting! I said to my self if a civic can do it so can my sunbird. so I worked hard and slowly, VERY SLOWLY!!! I started to let my rear wheels slip around me. I did it! I started to pick up the skills needed to FF drift. Then I switched cars I got a 93 5-speed cavy this sent me back to the stone age with my drift skills. I still work on it and now I'm starting to get back to were I was.but i still need a lot of work. I want to know who else is interested in this. j-bodys are awesome cars with FF potential. Who's going to be the first j-body drifter at D1(BIG drift event) If any one is interested please let me know. I be glad to get you started and help the best I can. Remember "Straights are for fast cars......Curves are for fast drivers"

Just put the biggest rear sway bar you can find on there and don't use a front sway bar
No the guy in the mag said you want a lose rear-end. Stiffness makes it hard to get sideways unlike a FR. And no I live in Va Beach and havent herd of any auto cross event but if i did i might be interested.

in the wet j bodies are insane drift cars and u have a lot of control of your speed and angle of drift as well as direction. oh and plan on using some different than street use tires as well uh cuz u will get some nice flat spots

Whats a good tire to use my rims use 185R 14's

Putting a rear sway bar in makes the car more "loose".

If you have never drifted before, just use whatever tire you got. I would just buy whatever used tires you can find that wont cause any problems.
First off FF drifting takes about 1000 times more practice then you think you need. Just getting the rear to start to slide is the very begining. One of the more basic ways is to pull the E-brake after you start to turn a little and then releasing it. Remember throtle and brake controle are very important (clutch controle also if you have a 5-speed)

I do alot of that on the snow... huge paking lot at work. have done some sweet drift turns counter steer and all. In the wet I agree the car is pretty good but i find that it hooks alot faster. I guess for dry roads I'd use a soft compound for the fron tires and a harder compound for the rear. And jack up that tire pressure in the rear.. that should help slide that puppy around.

But thats just me

Saw a few vids of civics drifiting.... pretty cool looks just like a rear wheel drive drift.

Nope, you get shims to put between the bearing hub and axle.

And Jbodys can drift when its wet....

There will never be a fwd at D1 or any real drift event. There is a difference between oversteer and drifting....
OH you are soooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stupid FOR YOUR INFO THERE ALREADY HAS BEEN A FF DRIFTER AT D1 THATS WHAT THE ARTICALE I READ WAS ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Now on to subject two . I'll be fair we wont call FF drifting, drifting we'll just call it "controled sideways movement when you break traction in the rear"
Re: j-body FF Drifting!?!?

Sorry about that. you just can't let some things go. Now let me give the faithful some useful Information. The reason you slide around in wet or snowy conditions is because you lose traction easier but, you can do the same thing in dry conditions with just a little more speed. This will make it harder to controle but that normal. You will never be a real drifter unless you spin out a couple times and hit something.
Another more advanced way to start a drift is to do a compresion drift. You need to come into the turn at the redline almost, right befor you start to turn press the clutch until you have just started the turn. You want the Rpm's to fall. once you start the turn dump the clutch. This will shift the wheight to the front as it slows it down. the rear will now be lighter and want to go faster than the front thus starting the drift. now the hard part is keeping it use the tecnique above and maybe a little E-brake. How ever I can't say it enough PRACTICE!!!!, PRACTICE!!!!

FWD cars don't drift...they slide or drag...

this is a good time to point out that there is a huge debate in the drift world over FF cars drifting or slideing? The better (the ones with te most skill) drifters say YES. after all as I pointed out earlier what is drifting? Guess what it controled sideways driving. Just like FF cars. You can Hate all you want but FF is drifting, and its growing. There has already been a FF driver from Japan in D1 (signifigent drift competition)

This is a subject that pisses off so many FR drivers. It's just a simple matter of opinion. I say FF cars CAN drift, but not as easily/accurately as FR cars can. Plus the technique is very different. I do not consider sliding around in the snow a proof of drifting ability, because I've been doing that for years and I most certainly do not consider myself a FF drifter. Everyone has an opinion on this however.

I've never heard of a "compression drift" before. What you're describing is called a "shift lock drift". It's used on FR cars to slow down the drivetrain and basically forces a loss of traction. This method probably wouldn't work in a FF car and is usually only done under wet conditions because it puts undue stress on the drivetrain. I would instead use a combination of weight balance and hand brake work to control an FF car.

I'm quite sure most "true" FF drifters get used to heavy hand brake work, as it is the only way to modulate the rear wheels once a drift has been initiated. A combination of momentum, steering and hand brake is whats needed to effectively "drift" a FF car in my opinion. Of course eventually you will LOSE momentum and stop, which is why most FR drivers say FF drifting isn't really true drifting.
Yes i've hurd it called shift lock drifting befor but compression drifting is also acurate because its basicly compression braking around a curve. it may also be call engin braking as well. as in life there are multiple terms for everthing. Another way to drift is to do a left foot brake this is extreamly difficult. As you aproch the turn at a high speed you tap or feather the brake with your left foot as you use your right foot to press the throtle.
this allows the front wheels to still pull while the rears lock up.
Another thing is to remember that drifting started as a rally racer thing. If you watch rally racing around almost every hairpin they drift and they have 4wd.

Since you're interested in drift techniques, I would suggest picking up Richard Burns Rally for the computer. Its a very technical, very challenging rally sim where you get to practice all these basic techniques that rally users utilize on the track. You do everything from left foot braking to the scandinavian flick, its great fun. But you had better have a good quality wheel and a lot of time as it is extremely challenging.
Even the "drift king" himself considers it drifting reguardless of which wheels are powered. And how's this for FF J-body Drift Action ( *You may need to right click and "save as")
