SEB for rear trailing arm camber and toe
Monday, November 15, 2004 5:23 AM
Who's up for writing and SEB to the SCCA to permit use of shims to alter toe and camber on rear trailing arm vehicles up to 2 degrees?

If I can get enough SCCA member here to actually do it I'll go over to the SE-R, and integra forums and see if they'll participate as well.
I'd go to those forums now to generate support. It's too late to do anything for '05 rules, but could work for '06.

I'd also suggest that we do not limit the alignment specs. Let people run whatever they want. Add the shims to the STS ruleset and rework it for SP classes (has to be within factory specs now, but should also be whatever the driver wants.)

Either that or someone get GM to give us a TSB on shims being allowed to alter rear alignment. At least that way we could max out the factory specs, which would be well within the toe settings we need though does lack a little on the camber side (at least in my preliminary testing.)
I'll tell the acura and sentra in my region to contact their respective sources. Has anyone here written an SEB before?
Nope, but the manner in which to write them is outlined in the rulebook (which I don't have a personal copy of)
Does anybody know for sure that a TSB does not already exist?

I had a conversation with Ken Rupp a few years ago when I ran my 89 cavalier at a divisional event and he said that he ran his sunbirds with a shim plates on the rear end.
If you don't know who he is, Ken is a national level autocrosser (he is currently doing GS with his Toyota) and in a previous life was the owner of a Pontiac dealership in Ocala, FL and now I think in the Atlanta area. My point being that he would have the resources to know if there is a TSB or factory documentation on rear shims for accident repair, and secondly, that as a well-known national driver, I am sure that his car was squeaky clean as far as legality is concerned.
So,,,,,,, there may be a TSB, or repair procedure already documented by GM.

My 2 cents concerning usage of those plastic shims:
1. The bolts securing your hub will tend to loosen by using the plastic shims - I am guessing do to cold flowing of the plastic. Less than confidence building when I am racing. I hate when my rear hubs fly off!
2. The rear end on a front heavy fwd vehicle isn't nearly as important as the front end - so why bother.

On the other hand, Ken and his son did pretty well using shims (SCCA national championship good), so I am hoping one of you studdly Cavalier jockeys will go out and do some autocross before and after experimentation and let us all know if this is worth a sh*t or not. Inquiring minds want to know.

It should be allowed for any type of car with a similar rear axel. I would support that idea.

what you need to do to get around the rules is to get into a wreck that happens to alter your camber around 2 degrees.
14.8 SUSPENSION
A. Ride hight may only be altered by suspension adjustments, the use of spacing blocks, . . . .

So would the "shims" be ok if you called them "spacing blocks" ?

if you think you cant spot 2.0 degrees or more of camber just from looking at the car, you havent been looking hard enough. i can see it plain as day on my Z24 on the front.
Has anyone checked with the body shop guys, I talked with one a guy I work with and he indicated that to repair the rear toe and camber the body shop's will adjust with a porta-power.. if the axle is not too bad..
