BFG Drag radials Safe for stock axles? & what HP?
Sunday, September 25, 2005 7:15 PM
I am wanting to get some BFG drag radials and Ive had people who race fbodies tell me the could damage my axles. Where is the threshold that I should be concerned about causing damage with them? I know there is always a risk of damaging the driveline drag racing but any suggestions? Thanks

yeah....F-Bpdies are a totally different monster than our cars. Ive easily made 100 runs on my BFGs and not even a microcrack on either axle.

i know Hahn has been running slicks for a long time on the factory axles with no issues too...which cant be done according to everyone i talked to before...LOL.

dont listen to everyone...gonna try things yourself sometimes

Yeah like hypsy says, if people haven't done it themselves, don't listen to their advice...

In a recent issue of SCC, there was a 300+ hp Omni running full slicks, and he was using J-body axles adapted to work with his trans (not sure exactly what was involved with that). Judging from how very few "broke my axle" posts I see here (compared to my home at VWVortex) the J axle is actually one of the stronger components on the car.

i cant remember who it was that told me this...but if you grab a corvette drive axle and a J axle...they are close to the same size. now i know this doesnt exactly mean theyre as strong but that tells you something about them

It is not soo much power that breaks axles, more driving. Wheel hop is the biggest kiler of axles. As state Hahn has had good success on stock axles with slicks. It is in the driving.

Axles are fine, it's your differential that is the weak link. Biggest tip for that..refrain from doing burnouts with only one wheel spinning. Good luck and have fun.

f-body's have been known to blow differentials, I havn't heard of a J doing it yet. The trans and drivetrain are pretty good.

Remember the eco package was built to be meintanence free over the course of its lifetime. So sufficiently so, there is some overbuilding.

It's been our experience that the J axles are the physically largest in the sport-compact arena. Size DOES matter!

The key is to avoid wheels hop. Lots of people have run drag radials or slicks on stock axles and had no problems but other have broken axles on their stock OEM tires.

we were at the track yesterday, and saw honda's breaking axles left right and center.

one even sheered the diff pin and sent it thru the case! How many j's have we heard of that problem? (though the diff is our weakest link....some of us)

When Mike Karas was putting out 280hp, he broke the stock axles running Nitto 555R drag radials without wheel hopping.

Isuzu axles are not a thick I measured them when I did the swap with like a micrometer, so it was some small difference but enough.
like in hundredthes

Well from reading Bill Hahn's write up about our cars, J's have some of the biggest axles in the sport compact scene. Not saying they won't break, but we are in ok shape.
