1/4 mile second time
Saturday, May 07, 2005 9:16 AM
got my times down to a 15.86 at 86.06 mph!!!! i lowered shift points to 5000 in 1-2 and 2-3 then 5500 3-4. i got low 16's the rest of the night. this 15.86 run was the worst hop i ever experianced. all through first gear. think im going to have to go get myself an axle soon.

i would say 1st to 2nd shift at 5500, then the rest at 6000. you lose power after 6000rpm's. for us eco's we have low end power with the torque to support it. try that, it will help.

i wanna know the mods too

what are you launching at

tire pressure

It is not just ecotecs with torque, all GM 4 bangers have good torque compare to imports. I would shift 1-2 at 6000, and the rest of the gears at redline. You might start to lose a little hp after 6k, but you have to keep in mind when you shift the RPM's drop a lot, and you do not want to fall out of your power range, that could hurt you more.

Agreed^ Shift somewhere between 6000 and Redline. atleast 6 tho. anything sooner than that is too soon. See what works best for you, but I can almost guarantee that you will consistantly get better times by shifting at higher RPM's.

nice job on getting better times, but keep working...

what kind of 60 foot times are you running?

have you aired down your front tires, and aired up your rears? reducing pressure in the front gives you a wider foot print so you get slightly better traction, and increasing pressure in the rear reduces rolling resistance, making it easier for the engine to move the car.

what RPM are you launching at?

is your car an LS sport? if its a base model or special value price model you should be running in low 15 range...

I'm not sure what you mean by axle, but I don't think you're going to be breaking drive axles anytime soon.

if you're looking to get rid of wheel hop, you might want to do motor mounts, tranny mounts, and a-arm bushings. Better tires also help, as well as a good set of coilovers or otherwise stiffer suspension.

stock eco's don't run low 15's, the best I've seen is a 15.28, but only once, and most of them run upwards of 15.6-7 in stock form.

15.958 @ 88.201 stock, still getting @!#$ty launches...
Re: 1/4 mile second time

granted, its not a 15.2, but my gf's special value package runs 15.4s with her best being a 15.422@ 89.33mph the only thing she had was an intake.

my buddy bryan festa (whos around on the org somewheres) runs at pretty much the same, if not slightly faster with his and its completely stock

point being this kid can definetly drop his times, he just has to practice more

the only thing I can think of is if he has an LS or LS sport... the extra weight could probably be costing him the .4 in the quarter and the 3mph.

Why do you people bother racing with such slow cars?? 15's is nothing to be proud of.

it's called checking your progress

you establish a baseline, then as you mod run at the track (or dyno) to see how much of a difference there is.

15s in a V8 isn't something to be proud of, but in a stock N/A 4 banger isn't really that bad

Put quite bluntly, You are an ass. Race my camaro and see who's talking. Go to your 4th gen fourms and look like an idiot there then coming here and looking like an ass. Lets see that V8 running on 4cyls and beat an eco! Anyways:

Shift at around 6K for best performance. The powerband peaks from 4K to 5.5K, you always want to keep it in the powerband. For being stock thats hella good.

Lot of people without js are on these pages for whatever reason.

They forget that just like them, people enjoy modding cars whatever it may be, not everyone is out to have an 8 second car, some like the cavy for whatever reason, insurance prices, car prices, looks, dependability whtaever, but also like racing or what not, there is no rule that says all cars that race must be quicker than 13s in the 1/4 and nothing that says only imports can be show vehicles.

I found its easiest to ignore people like that!

(as of last night.)

there's plenty of j's running 15.3s and 15.2s, you're just not looking hard enough.

Really, WHAT IS THIS RIDICULOUS FASCINATION PEOPLE HAVE WITH SHIFTING SO FAR BEFORE REDLINE??? Here's a hint: Gearing>powerband.... Even as your power starts to decrease as you approach redline, you're still getting to the top of the gear, and its really the gearing that determines how fast you go.... and the higher speed you can get to, the more quickly you can get there, is how you get faster in the quarter.. Shifting at 5500 will only drop your motor out of the sweet spot in the rpm band on the shift, and make you slower. Short shifting has only ever made me slower by a WIDE margin.... almost half a second, and almost 4 mph slower in the trap speed. Wind it out, in every gear. I have yet to ecounter a 4 cylinder FWD that was actually faster by shifting lower than its intended redline.

Oh, and "low end power with the torque to support it? What jibberish is that? Torque IS you low-end power.... And just so you know the eco's biggest advantage over the 2.2 OHV is top end, and its about even with the 2.4 in that area. Its not a honda in the top rpms, but its still not bad.

Why do people come on here and just open thier mouths? The fastest car in my town which is a 9 second trans am doesnt talk sh*t about any of us. He is actually amazed to see the 2 or 3 honda civics running 12's and the 1 or 2 cavis running 13's here. granted it took money to do this, but i think if he doesnt talk @!#$ and he is way faster than u, u shouldnt be talking @!#$ either. because u never know maybe later on this man andrew smith or anyone on here can just mod their cars a little more and just go on and be able to beat ur trans am. so just shut up and show some respect cause like i said any one of these people can get serious mod thier cars and hand ur ass to u.

username twistedcavy98. i took my 2.2 SOHV to the track wensday and ran a 15.849@84.80 MPH. my 60 foot was a 2.307. the mods i have done is a 5 speed trany swap dualfriction clutch, i have ported and polished intake and exaust manifold, 5 angle valve job, steel sports valves, decked head, 62MM throttle body ported intake manifold, pacesetter header, with a magnaflow cat and custom 2half inch exhaust. And still wiating for my stiffer springs and roller rocker arms!
