Sunfire Overheating after replacing thermostat

Alright I replaced my thermostat on my 99 sunfire and now the car is overheating to the redline and there is no hot air coming out from the vents only cold air so any ideas? is there a bleeder? where I have to burp the coolant system? ASAP

was it overheating prior to the r&r of the thermostat? if not make sure its not in upside down(i know, i know, lol. but check anyway, im a certified mechanic and ive done it) also on my j i had a problem with the lower rad. hose collapsing and not allowing any coolant to flow.

hope your water pump didnt die

also my friend shoved a rag in the upper hose on his car to keep coolant from spilling out then put the hose back on after thermostat change and said no heat and over heating, i pulled hose off and what ya know i pulle out the rag he stuffed in the hose.
im tring to make you look dumb but these are just a few of the stupid mistakes ive made when it was cold out and i was tring to rush a job..

possible clogged heater core? maybe... dont think that would cause you to overheat tho, just no heat.

well good luck man, keep us updated you got me curious

oh yeah try squeezing the rad. hoses a bunch of times, try and get as much air out as possible, i believe the cooling system on your car is self bleeding but try it anyways.

im sure there is a whole lot more knowledge out there on this forum to help you with this than what i can give you.

also make sure cooling system is topped off.

good luck

? did you place the thermostat (new) back in place of the oem part in the housing exactly like the orig. There is a pin in the thermostat that has to be placed in a position upward in most cases to make the part work properly.I would not rule out the thermostat being BAD even if new! If ur car did not overheat b4 and had heat it would only make me believe eithr u have a bad thermostat,a coolant hose or hoses colapsing or lots of air pockets in the system.I would repl the thermostat and refill system, and leave the resevoir cap OFF let the car run for 15-20 minutes heat on high this helps all the air escape out being air goes to the highest point and use some card board in front of the rad to speed up the heating up.I would highly recomm new upper/lower hoses if over 4 yrs old regardless of appearance this is rule of thumb for hoses.A stuck therm or air in the system would make no heat,or high temp,or coolant hose caving in preventing proper coolant flow not uncommon.I would not say the heater core is toast or clogged,or water pump if the car did not show the signs b4 u did this work.

Alright! Thank you everyone it turned out that I had air pockets air was trapped, how ever I now have another problem the temp of the engine went back to normal the heat is still weak there is high air but very little heat now I can even smell the anti freeze from the vents someone told me that i have a leak in the heat core? so any ideas?

Can I use stop leak ? since there is a leak in the heat core ?

my thought on all stop leaks: if it can stop the flow in one spot, it can stop it in someplace more important. stay away.

im thinkin heater core.

if the heater core is clogged stop leak will clog it more, u are better of replaing the heater core than tryin to un glog it, imo.
i have tried to unclog a few and they all leaked later on.

now if your heater core is leaking and not clogged then you will probably have a wet passenger side floor from the coolant
leaking out(had it happpen on my old 97 Z24).

let us know whats up man.

Not to biased here but I myself used some of the liquid stop leak for my 87 mazda that had a small freeze leak around the seal for the water pump and poured in and with in less than 30min leak stopped. Now I did flush the system a wk later and refilled and NO leak or over heat to this day and that was over 3yrs ago.Now granted the premise is correct if the core is blocked this would only make the prob worse.Heck try it and wait a day or two and if no change and do a flush with a coolant flush product (prestones works fine) and u do not have coolant leaking into the carpet area I would try it.Worst case u should buy a new heater core. The above post do have good points too.

alright guys!! tell me is it for sure that it's a heat core problem since I can smell the anti-freeze from the vents when my heat is on ? so the car doesn't have a head gasket
