J-body... jargon?

ok guys feel free to call me an idiot but I have some questions

1. When someone says OHC are they talking Sohc or Dohc? Or is it any J engine that is Ohc?

2. What is the 2200?

3. Which J's dont have the Eco? & what do they have in its place?

4. Anything you'd like to add?

when someone says OHC, they are refering to the old pushrod 2.2 OHV motor. a single cam with pushrods is about all it is, kinda like half a v8.

the 2200 i believe is just the newest versions of the 2.2 as stated right here ^^^

J's had ecotecs starting in 02 on come models, some GT sunfires and the LS Sport cavaliers, all 03 and up Cavaliers and Sunfires have them. Some '02 and all older cars to '95 came with the 2.4 Twin Cam motor (Z24 Cavaliers and GT Sunfires) and the rest of them had the 2.2 OHC motor.

OHC refers to SOHC or DOHC. Read the wiki article below and that should answer your questions.

CorKey actually got the 2200 answer correct.

It's easier to say which cars have the eco. Some 2002 and all 03+. All of the 02's that have the eco are Z24's or Sunfire GT's.
95 had the 2.3L in the Z's/GT's.
96-mid 02 Z's/GT's had the 2.4L. Some base model cars could be had with a 2.4L. I've only ever seen 2 95-99 Sedans with a 2.4L and a 5 speed from the factory. (I wish I would have known that and I would have bought a base model with the 2.4L instead of my 99 Z.)
95-97 2.2 OHC, 98-02 was the 2200 which is an updated 2.2OHV.

OHC means Over Head Cam, the D or S in front of it just stands for Dual or Single. The cams are located in the cylinder head.
DOHC = Dual Over Head Cam
SOHC = Single Over Head Cam
OHV = Over Head Valves, which means that the cam is located in the block like the old v-8s.


2.2 ECOtecs and 2.4s are DOHC.

not to be a jerk, but to defend myself a little I knew SOHC and DOHC just wasnt sure which was ment when people says OHC

When most people say OHC on here..... we know what motor they mean because we know the cars well enough to fiqure it out.... thats all.

If you have a 95 OHC..... we know that its a 2.3 DOHC

If you say you have a 96 to 2001 OHC.... we know your talking about the 2.4 DOHC(LD9)

If you have a 2002.... well you need to specify because you could either have an Eco or a 2.4

If you have a 2003 or later.... well it doesn't matter..... thy're all Ecotec DOHC (L61)

If you have an OHV in any 3rd gen.... you have a 2.2 (pre 98) or 2200 (98 or later) all 2.2 and 2200 are LN2 and have a single in block cam with pushrods and rockers.... There are a few differences such as the location of the coils and the crank posistioning sensor.... but nothing really major.

Stock HP at the flywheel (if I remember correctly)

2.4 = 150
Eco = 140
LN2 = 115 (I think... somebody correct me if I'm wrong)
2.3 = I can't remember. (but the number is higher than the other 3)

Some other jargon I've seen and used:

Isuzu/Getrag = referring to the trans. 95-99 manuals came with a 5 spd built by Isuzu. 2k+ has a 5 spd trans built by Getrag.
LSS = LS Sport
BBK = Big Brake Kit

Actually...all the 02s with the Eco are LS Sports in the USA...Z24 in Canada.

All the 02 Z24's had the 2.4 in the USA...not sure about Canada...if they just changed the engine mid year?

im pretty sure the 2.3 had the same HP as the 2.4 (150)

Ecotec: 140hp
2.4l: 150hp
2.3l (HO): 180hp
LN2(2200): 115hp
LN2: 120hp
2.3l (SOHC): 120hp

OHC is accepted as SINGLE overhead cam, it is not implying anything more.
The 2200 is the 98+ engine (updated head, cam profile among other things from the old 2.2 OHV)
The OHV meaning Overhead Valve means the cam is located anywhere other than the head and pushrods are used to move the valves (V8s have it in the crevice between the heads).
2002.5 or so has the eco (as an option), the eco became standard in 2003.
There are variations of the 2.4l, but most Z24/Sunfire GTs (third gen) have it. There were a few exceptions in which the 2.3l was used.
