I'm sure this has been asked alredy, but i tried the search, and didnt get the asnwer i was looking for, or just didnt know specificaly what the words were to search it.
whats up with the first gear, you cannot downshift into it unless youre going 10 and under? is that normal? its like grinding the gear and it bugs the hell out of me!
i've heard its a synrco in the gearbox, and that all chevys do this (well the dealership told me this that i bought this car from)

I can dowshift into first just fine (getrag trans.)...........are you familiar with rev matching?
1st gear is actually a starting gear, so yes I don't blame your tranny for getting pissed cause you want to shift down into it but you should be able to shift into it if the RPMs do match and going at a certain speed.

Well the problem doesnt deal with rev matchin, i already tried it!
I down shift all the time, as oposed to just braking while coming to stop lights, and its wierd because for some reason, unless i'm going under 10mph it will grind the first gear.

i never downshift into first. i go to second and when the car gets down to about 10mph, i just pop it in neutral. getrag is the trans in the 2k+ cavs
but if you were to lets say shift it to 1st, it would still grind? I'm just tryin to figure out if thats normal or not, so if its something that needs to get fixed, can get fixed, or theres nothing i can do about it... I am still covered under a waranty for that...

its suppost to do that. its so you dont blow your trans. it does it for all the gears i believe, so you dont accidently go into the wrong one.

it only really does this for first and reverse. when im rolling up to a stopsign or stoplight with the lutch in, and try to shift into ifrst just to be ready to get moving again, it is very difficult and often impossible until you slow down. You also cannot shift into reverse easily if the car is going forward at more than 5mph or so. No way to remove this block.
Well as long as i'm not the only one with that problem.. (just irritating, isn't it?)

it does it for me in second and third too. if its too fast and the rpms are gonna be too high, it wont let you in the gear til the rpms drop. it dont think its that annyoing
You know whats scary, Driving about 65 or 70 MPH, and accidently putting the car in reverse. Ive done it twice, the tranny automaticly shirts itsself to neutral even though the stick in in reverse.

dont you have the knob that you gotta pull up to put it in reverse?..... or is this in an auto?

with the install of my short shifter i lost the reverse lock :/
I know I could always downshift into 1st when going about 10 or so.....but I did test drive an 01 Z24 that did what yours is and it ended up being a synchro AND the throwout bearing.

your explanation sounds normal. I don't find it a hassle at all. If I'm slowing down to a red light I coast in neutral every time so that I can brake normally. I do find when I'm slowing down and almost home and want to put it in 1st to go slow, I just wait til its at a low speed. ya know?
