2011 progress. Time for some boost
Tuesday, January 18, 2011 5:00 PM
Well its time for another winter overhaul. I just bought Aaron ODonoghue's turbo kit a couple weeks ago, and I'm pretty fired up. I've also got some work to do on the air ride and a dash to finish. I'm taking my time with the install, so progress may be a little slow.

I just picked this up at home depot. It gets the garage surprisingly warm in this miserable UP weather.

So far I just starting pulling off some of the old stuff. I realized I need a harness for the new injectors, so I'm going to order the cobalt one from ZZ and try to repin it.

Heres a bunch of pics of the parts laying around. The exhaust is laying under my bumper

This is one of the first things I'm a little confused about. I've been reading about the oil feed and return. I plan to use the spots on the back of the block for my oil pressure gauge and oil feed. I was under the impression the stainless line was used for both, but this fitting kind of threw me off when I saw it. Is this for using something else, like rubber hose?

Also, when looking at stainless lines and fittings, is there a way to tell what size they are? I have a couple sections of hose here, but I'm not sure what size they are.

That fitting is for a push on hose, usually rubber

I would suspect that oil lines would be a -4 AN fitting?

if by t bolts you mean v band, v band is one of the best seals and quickest seals you can get.

That fitting is for Rubber hose when i was turbo 2200 I ran that line to the oil dipstick for the drain just welded another pipe to oil dipstick at bottom. For the injectors all you need is bosch clips and solder them to your harness can get them at junkyard there ev1 style comes on alot of diffrent cars and will cost you a couple bucks.

Whatever you paid for the kit, you got a steal. That is by far one of the best turbo kits I have ever seen for the 2200.

You don't need a new injector harness, you just need the correct pigtails....

nope no built motor. I'll just see how this one holds up for the time being.

I've been out in the garage for an hour or two today and it is cold. UP sucks. That battery tray is a really pain in the ass to get out. FML. Also, to anybody who has pulled that front coolant bar on the 2200, does it just slide out of the block on the left? I think it may make things a little easier if I pull it for the time being.

Well, I finally got out in the garage and did some more wrenching. I got my new pigtails in the mail to switch to the ev1 injectors so I spent some time saudering those in. I took all the pics with my phone today, so if they look a little shotty thats why.

This is a good comparison of the old injector connectors to the new.

Here I was getting ready to sauder these bad boys up. I pulled the harness back quite a ways so I could work easier and try to reroute some things.

After doing my connections I started shoving the wires back into the factory wire loom. I never noticed that the factory wiring goes right over the coil packs and looks pretty hideous. I was able to run it underneath instead which I think cleaned it up a little bit AND, I didn't need to extend anything. I took this comparison of the new fuel rail/injectors/fpr setup compared to the old before I bolted it up. Check out the new hotness

Heres some pics of it bolted up. Everything went in a lot easier then it came out. I swear the nut on the stock fpr was torqued by brock lesner.

By now I was pretty much freezing my balls off, but I decided to hook up the adapter that Aaron had set up for the catch can/vacuum mani/ and fuse box. I'm pretty impressed with the quality of it. +1 for OEM.

I started messing with the charge piping, but beer 30 was calling my name so I didn't really get anywhere with that. One of the pipes is a little confusing as far as a mounting tab goes, but it all looks pretty straightforward. It felt good to finally work on the car again.

I got a little more done today. The weather was awesome up here. The manifold and turbo are now mounted up. Clearances were a huge pita, but its starting to look like something. Heres some pics.

There was a piece with the kit that has been puzzling me since I got it, and I finally got to put it to use today. I turns out one of the coolant lines doesn't clear the manifold, so there is peice of hardline that goes down under and back up. Using it required cutting one of the hard lines, but luckily I don't have a problem cutting @!#$ up anymore. So, out came the sawzall. haha

This is just a crappy picture of me guestimating where to make a cut

I finally got the manifold on. Talk about tight.

This is the chunk that had to go. Kind of reminds me of cutting up the gas door line.

And heres where I'm at. Mani, turbo, and downpipe on. I'm really realizing how much work putting together a custom kit is. I'm glad I got something ready to rock for my first time.

Oh yeah. Crappy phone pics ftw. lol. When you guys did your upper mount did you support the engine with the oil pan? I was going to use a 2x4 and jack, but I just figured I'd ask and see what other people are doing.

I just looked and noticed I already made the cut in the first pic. My bad

I haven't been working on the car much recently, but its still coming together. Most of the remaining work is under the car, so that blows. Here are a couple packages that showed up this week.

I also bought these on a whim. I've been having a good time with the bags, but I kind of missed the corner carving. I couldn't pass up the deal and decided to switch it up.

Everybody went home for the weekend, so I had nothing better to do then work on the car. It finally starting to warm up here, which means the garage is full of water. I probly did 10 shop vac loads today. haha

I finally picked up a new grinder and cut up the bumper support. The brackets were set up to use factory holes. That was convenient

I didn't take any pics of the coilovers going on and the air ride stuff coming out, but heres a pic of the front. I'm definitly going to adjust them lower. One of the rear bolts was a huge bitch to get off. After soaking in pb for a half hour and torching it I finally got it. I guess I forgot to put some thread dope on that one last time.

And heres what under the hood looks like now. I put everything back together and replaced the motor mount earlier this week. I'm running out of stuff to do.

I started messing with the exhaust today and almost had it finished until I snapped a bolt on one of the v band clamps. No pics of that though
