front end swap progress
Sunday, November 29, 2009 11:46 AM
Well I have been wanting to put a cav front on the sunfire for atleast 2 years now and finally decided to do it. Haven't quite got all the parts for it yet but I am getting there! Was lucky enough to get a z24 bumper, crush guard, headlights, corner light brackets for 51 bucks with tax! One thing I am most surprised about is how well everything is fitting together. The only issue I am having is the lower portion of the fender is catching on the edge of the door. Its weird to me as the gaps all seem good until you get closer to the bottom then it really tightens up. I have a couple of rectangular spacers between the fender and the body that were used with the original sunfire fenders but that doesn't seem to help anything. Any tricks to solve this issue? I'm not really in a panic right now, I am just fitting things together before taking it all apart again and sending the car to paint. Anyway all in all I think the car is looking good, I have always liked the cav front better than the sunfire, but I like the sunfire rear better than the cavs. So its the best of both worlds to me!

Here you can sort of get an idea of how tight the fender gets to the bottom of the door

Gook effort. But install a lip to pull it off better. Oh man that engine looks small in there.

Wow, haha! I thought the project would be recieved a little better than that! No worries though, its nice to hear everyones thoughts for sure. I really am excited to see what my car will look like when its painted and back together along with some new wheels. For the most part it has been in an auto caccoon for a couple years now, so to be finally able to start putting my plans into action is a good feeling. Maybe I can actually drive it next year for a change!

idk, I really like that style of the Sunfires, I'll miss that front...

Maybe with an LSS lip or a WW bigmouth bumper it'll be cool...

Thanks for the comments everyone! I promise once its fully painted and assembled it will be as clean or cleaner looking that the previous look. I will be putting a lip on just not sure if it will be the ls sport or the wings west one, whichever one is easier to find I guess!

Im with you Chris. Though the Evil Eyes are sexy I would kill for a Cav front on my car.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I can't wait to get it done and painted, I am hoping this weekend I can figure out the issues with the fender gap.

Not too much in the way of updates this week, but I did get the drivers side fender lining up really well. The passenger side is not so nice. It seems a bit sunken in near the top then it sticks out a bit at the bottom! I have been adjusting off and on for a few days now but I just can't quite get it right. The car came down on a jack a few years back and crushed the bottom of the passenger fender, so I'm guessing the mounting points are a bit off because of that. Hopefully the body shop will be able to tweak it a bit.

This is a shot of the sunfire headlight housing. Are the cavalier headlights supposed to have that round silver retainer so the bulb stays in place? Both of the cav lights I have do not have this piece so naturally the bulbs are not staying put!

Thanks for looking!

you didnt happen to get your fenders from ebay did you ?

It's either you one bad day with a jack stand, or the fender was bent/warped in shipping a little bit. It happens though. I mean they are some pretty Thin Tins.

Come to think of it, it could be a bit of both! The mounting points underneath are not that far out of shape but when I bolted the top of the fender down, the bottom was sticking out a good 6-8 inches. So the fender could very well be tweaked a bit from shipping. The fenders are not from ebay, but I did buy them from a local parts warehouse, so who knows where they had to travel from to get there!
